What are troops doing in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Why are soldiers there?

Both countries please.
Additional Details
Thank you Gigi. Why are troops there though? Are these countries dangerous to us or are troops trying to help them keep order in their own country?

We are in Afghanistan to root out the Taliban, who were giving refuge to Al Qeada, and extremist, and a place to train for future attacks against the west.We are also at the same time trying to install a Democracy, but corruption in the government is making that a hard fight, also.Although we have pulled off a couple of elections. These people risk their lives literally to vote, and get to the polls, these elections are pulled off due to the diligence of our armed forces which makes them possible. Also we are stopping the repression of women, which is one of the main problems w/ the Talis, not to mention the fact they can hurt or kill you and your family for talking to the wrong people, but the main reason is to keep the Taliban from taking back over, which would be detrimental to our national security. We are exiting Iraq at present. The main reason for going to Iraq, was to get rid of Saddam.

We are in both places to change the world for the better.

Iraq is now a functioning democracy where an elected government has recently been replaced by another elected government in a peaceful and orderly transition of power. In effect - by going to Iraq we gave a better future to over 25 million people.

Afghanistan will take longer because of the fact that the years of Taliban rule created a 'lost generation' who are functionally illiterate. Without a base of people with even basic literacy skills - the country cannot progress and they cannot even develop minimially efficient police forces. It will take about 10 more years for the next generation to become educated and arrive to start taking over.

I'm currently in Iraq with an Infantry Battalion. Today I lead a 20 man detail to remove weeds from our Landing Zone. Tomorrow we will do the same thing. Some day, over the next few weeks we will sign over our base to the Iraqi Army and go home. It wasn't always like that here.

I heard a rumor that there are still bullets flying in Afghanistan.

M
There are there to protect us. Asking anymore is unpatriotic!!! lmao.

Seriously though, Im sure sure you're asking this question genuinely but you'll get a lot of stick for it. MOST people have no idea why we're there, they will just assume because troops are there both countries are dangers to us. Assuming is bad, Im all for asking questions. I'd like to ask the government this same question.

In both cases, trying to stabilize that screwed up region.

The answer that says to ask is unpatriotic is very misguided.
If you don't question your military or your government then you are asking for trouble.

There are troops in Iraq and Afghanistan basically to keep trouble off the doorstep of the US and Europe. Pull the troops out and the problem will migrate to the US and UK. (Muslims call the US "The great Satan")

The motive for the invasions of both countries are different. 9/11 prompted the invasion of Afghanistan to take out Osama bin Laden. The Iraq invasion - in my humble opinion -was all about releasing the 10% of the world's oil reserves in Iraq, trapped by 12 years of UN sanctions. The official reason was that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction were a threat to the west.

I notice you are in Australia, you have your fair share of problems with Muslims, remember the Bali bombing?

EDIT:
@shut up. World peace is a dream of beauty pageant contestants. Man is a war like creature, as long as Man exists there will be wars and conflict, it's a fact of life

come on,america invents problems then invades that country and uses lies, propaganda,it works well for them, like everyone believes that 1.5 billion muslims are terrorists, now they are playing this game with north korea which is very dangerous,it could be to redirect the attention of the economy, anyway they should stop playing god with people's live and pherhaps we could have world peace

Gigi
Iraq: Still fighting, but mostly just patrolling the area attempting to keep the peace. They are also waiting to come home.

Afghanistan: Same as above only we are not coming home from Afghanistan anytime soon. Not because we are still fighting, but because the president from over there met with Obama and is really liking the progress we have made by being over there. So pretty much to keep the piece.

Celsus
I would like to point out that, until 2011, Canada was the third largest contributing nation to the war effort in Afghanistan, was responsible for Khandahar province.

Dement3d 1 US Army
For Afghan: The 9/11 attacks were by Taliban/Al Quada terrorist organization which occupies Afghan, and was in control of the whole country. We went there to dismantle them to prevent further attacks on the US and to get them out of power.

Iraq: Bush claimed that they has weapons of mass destruction which were never found, and to get Saddam Hussein and his regiment out of power which we pretty much did. Saddam was a danger to us, and he was also a brutal dictator.
