What are your opinions of the draft? do you support it today?

I think I would rather be defended by a group of people chosing to do so rather than forced. Also its not needed at this time- if we are in a world war or such then that is a different ball of string all together---and no, I don't think our country's schools should press anyone to do anything except respect each other and the freedoms this country gives us. Education not indoctrination.

There are quite enough volunteers. Also I don't think Charles Rangel's 'suggestion' that we reinstate the draft is a good idea at all. First, he only wants it so that, shall we say 'upper class' young people could be drafted right along with kids who may be considered underprivileged. Second, knowing government, there would always be a way to keep the so-called 'upper-class' from being drafted anyway. (And why the big push for a 'draft' again anyway while we are engaged in this useless war? Why not during peacetime Rangel?)
And no, I do not believe that schools should make an aggressive effort to "encourage all male students to register for the draft". First, they have to register anyway. and secondly, it is far more important that efforts be made to make certain that ALL students receive an excellent education no matter what type school they attend.
It's usually old men who wage war. That being the case, these very same old men should fight those wars. The continuial sacrifice of young men and women to fight old man wars is ridiculous.Educate the young. Because wars always were is no reason why they should always be.

I didn't agree in 1966 and I don't believe now that it is right to force people to fight for a cause that they do not believe in. If the U.S. had been attacked then that is a different story. But we are the aggressor in every war since W. W. l l and that is just wrong for our country.

Registering for the draft is the law. Period.

As to the draft itself, I do not and never will support one. The nature of freedom is at odds with conscription. If the government fails to induce enough citizens to volunteer for a foreign war, it has not made it's case sufficiently and does not deserve support for that war. If the United States is ever invaded, you can rest assured that the citizens will defend their country in full force.

I don't agree to it at all. I think everyone should have a choice with their own life. As far as encouraging male students to register again it should be their choice and they should not be pressured into doing anything they may regret.

There will not be a draft in America unless our very survival is at stake. I do not support it today. As far as I know, only one member of congress (Charles Rangel (D)NY) supports it. I registered for the selective service when I was 18 and my son will when he is 18. The aggressive effort was to educate everyone about it since it was the law. If you don't register, there are legal ramifications. Its easier to just register, since it is unlikely in the extreme that it will ever be enacted.

The reason there is even a draft now is because of the lack of volunteer's to enlist, they need people and perfer people who want to go instead of made to go, but they will do what needs to be done.

as I found out by almost getting in trouble with this, you HAVE to register with the draft. it is the law and they do check up on you doing so. if I remember rightly, it can land you in a federal prison if you don't. yes I think that older children should be told that to keep them out of trouble.
The draft will not come back in this country unless we have a Major war on our hands and can't get enough troops . politicians use it to frighten the public into agreeing with or disagreeing with their present point of view.
As a member of the US Navy , in the DEP program, I willingly agreed to serve, and I think others should have the same choice, but if the need is there, then I think the people should serve the national good, rather than their own personal agenda.

It is a law that the males register. Yes, they need to make it a point to tell them they need to do this as it's against the law not to do so. I don't support the draft cause they make really lousy soldiers and the men and women who go in willingly don't want to have to deal with them, they have enough to do. The draft doesn't do anybody any good but if we don't get enough volunteers then it's the only choice and those who are trying to make it hard on recruiters are going to accomplish the return of the draft. To say that it will stop future wars is a myth cause with each war the president has the choice to use it or not use it. So I say no to the draft. In these days they could choose to send women if they wanted.

OK, I do and I don't. For those of us who are in the Military or served in the Military know that we need more people this is why the the tours are longer and we are returning so often. The tours are longer to give more home stabilization but its not happening because we don't have enough people. I wish people would just be like you know what let me help out do what I can. These are your brothers and sisters that are fighting with no time to recover before they are off again. Sure the MONEY IS AWESOME but its not worth it after awhile. I don't want people to be forced to join but then I also believe we need more troops. Bottom line I think everyone is sitting on there rears saying oh we are gonna pull out soon so why bother! Not true we are not going anywhere for a lil while so I am sure that capitol hill will do whatever it is they need to do if the time comes.

I am in favor of staffing our armed services through the draft.
I lived in a time when I was likely to be drafted. (OK Vietnam.)
I ended up serving 4 years in the Navy rather than 2 years in the war of my age.
I believe that our political leaders today do not have enough skin in the game. If the draft were real then the children and grand children of our leaders would have to stand for service. When our leaders families are likely to pay the price of war then our leaders would have second thoughts about provocative actions that lead to war.

The Draft should be in place...for men and women..Mandatory Military service is a good thing. Schools should instill Patriotism, along with strong history lessons....

the draft is bull **** even if there is one i will make sure myself thhat anyone who is fighting for what they dont believe in wont fight bush's poinless war.
