What branch of the U.S.A millitary should I Join?

Having spent some time inside the Pentagon, I have it on authoritative - although not official - grounds that the Air Force has the smartest people and the Marines the least. Although one Air Force colonel remarked that your IQ went up 10 points when you retired from the Marines. Now if you should happen to be gay perhaps the Navy would be best (remember that old disco song - those guys knew what it was all about).

As the grafitti said: "join the navy and see the world - through a porthole" or "Be all that you can be - at a buck and a quarter an hour"

Now don't get me wrong the military is a great racket if you work it right. I have seen it in action. But you must make a career of it and college is required (surely you have heard of ROTC). Become an officer and then retire at around 40 or so and get a job with a defense contractor. You will get double what the military was paying plus your retirement money and benefits from the military. And the pentagon is a nice place to work. It was much better in the old days when there was more privledge and stuff but alas the old days are gone. I would seriously consider this option since it has much going for it. Being as young as you are you might not appreciate this or think that much about where you will be when you are 50 but if the military is your choice, what I outlined above is the way to do it. Like I said I have seen people do it and they have no regrets about the money and the security.

But on a more basic level, unless you are contemplating the route I suggested above, why is it that you want a job where you might have to kill people? Not just men but women and children? Are you not smart enough to go to college? There are always community colleges. Much easier to get into. Do you need someone to tell you when you can get up and when you should go to sleep? Tell you what clothes to wear? Are these the tough things in life that you have trouble dealing with?

My practical advice though is this. Join the USAF. Since you are apparently going to join one of these and I doubt if college either with or without ROTC is an option, at least this way you will be able to skip jarhead comments and others that might not be quite as kind as that . Believe me, marines get laughed at (and not just by civilians who dislike the military but by their fellow brothers in arms - although not to their face since no person in their right mind wants to be brutally beaten by a thug regardless of the affiliation of the uniform he wears and who sports one of those peculiar haircuts which I think Heinrich Himmler invented).

You should go with your instinct and go with what you want to join. All it matters is that your happy. I'm in the air force and love it. Listen to your heart because your the one in the end who has to do basic training, schooling and then going to your follow on base.

If you end up making it a career the Army will treat you better and you will advance quicker. But, if you just want a short tour the jar heads will make a man out of you. Hoo fakg Rah!!!!

I would encourage you to go into whatever rating or job you can get that is closest to what your interests are.

I volunteered, I spent 5 yrs in, I never regret it, it was the most formative years of my life. It gave me a great educational base to work from after I got out and I went on and got a degree after.

I would sit down and study the marines and air force and see which offers something that interests you. Mind you, it may be an MOS or rating that is not currently accepting applicants and then you have to have a second choice and third choice in mind. We need good men and women in todays Armed Forces and you sound like will add something good to the troops.

As for making your mom proud, just do your best and she will be, I guarantee you. Moms always worry though, too. Keep in good communications with her while you are gone.

First you need to make sure that your joining the military for yourself, not to make your mother proud. She would probably be proud of you if you were flipping burgers if she loves you. So join the branch that interest you the most. I personally recommend the Coast Guard, my husband retired and had a great ca-rear, but also my son is active duty Army and he loves it. Bottom line is........it's your choice.

Well if your planning on retiring, than I would go Air force. But if your using the military as a somewhat foundation to buliding a resume or somewhat. Than I would go Army. Out of all the branches, the Army has the most jobs to offer that could relate more to what you wanna do when or if you decide to get out.

Well, if you think you can hack carrying 100 pounds on your back and humpin it in hot desert sands or dangerous streets where snipers can pop up anywhere...go for it. Having said that, do not get me wrong, I have the greatest respect for our Marines.

I am in the USAF and don't regret joining. I work closely with Marines, Soldiers, and Sailors.
We all love our branches. But if you actually sit down and talk with us, I have found that most people will agree that the quality of life in the AF is significantly better. Yes saying you are a Marine or a Soldier sounds better and it is more demading, but no matter what branch you choose, be proud knowing you are serving.

You join the Marines because you want to be a Marine. Not because you have nothing better to do. Figure out what interests you. Talk to the recruiters and see what fields you are eligible for. If you want tech, go Air Force. The Navy has the same opportunities but you have the chance of being stuck on a ship a lot. Army has a bit of everything and has more of it than the Marines as it is a larger force.
A Marine is a different animal. Every Marine, regardless of MOS (job), is a rifleman first. Every Marine Officer (pilot, supply, maintenance, administrative) is trained as a basic infantry officer before he receives training in anything else. Regardless of what you do, you may find yourself on the front line.
Once you become a Marine, you are a Marine for life.
Spend some time researching, talk to different recruiters and anyone else who may have served. Pay little attention to those who have not for most are totally ignorant of what it means to serve and sacrifice or just do something that is really hard.
Think it over. Do your home work. If you still want to serve then God Bless and good luck.

I come from a military family. My late husband was in the Marine Corps. The Marines are great, and I stand behind them 100%, but it is no secret that the Air Force receives more funding, i.e., nicer facilities. I think no matter which branch you chose, your mother should be very proud of you for choosing the military.

I know people in the army, navy and marine corps, but don't know anyone from the air force, so I can't say what they'd be like.

The choice boils down to what you want to do. Do you want to go into a tech heavy service? Or do you want to be a ground pounder? If you want to go tech heavy then join the Air Force. If you want to be a grunt join the Marines. If you want a combination join the Army.
