What can I do to repair my relationship with my younger brother?

I feel so guilty & remorseful about this.
My brother is 25 has been in the Army (Australian) for 5 years. I'm 10 years older than him & he was only 11 when our mother died, so I kind of took on the role, a little bit, of a 'mother' figure, although just before she died, I had got married and moved, interstate for work. Obviously our dad looked after him and they had a very close bond.
When he originally informed me, about 7 years ago, that he was to join the Army; my first reaction was to say, "Bloody hell - why?". The reasons I stated this is due to our dad, who is a former Vietnam Vet, & the way in which he suffered from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) & the affect it had on our family.
My brother was really, really, upset by my reaction and we ended up having a huge argument. This occurred just before he was deployed to Iraq. I sent letters over to him & care packages and tried to show him in every way that I supported him, that I just have a 'big mouth' sometimes. Over time, things settled between us and we became mates again.
He's currently in Afghanistan and has some leave at the moment. He arrived last week and marched in the Anzac Day parade on Saturday, & afterwards, we met up and had a few drinks. On the Saturday, we made arrangements to meet at the gravesite of our parents on Sunday, to place some flowers, etc there.
On Sunday I waited and he didn't show up. When I finally got in contact with him, he said that he and some mates had had a "few too many" drinks.
I became furious, and SCREAMED - got really 'aggro' at him. I called him every single I could think of, under the sun and went totally ballistic.
Now, I feel really, really, guilty, as when I tried to call him, he's just been ignoring my calls, text msgs, etc. I know I've done the wrong thing and he's leaving on Friday to go back to Afghanistan and now I just feel so guilty and ashamed and can't eat or sleep.
I wish I could take back what I said, but I know I'm unable to do that.
I've come to realize over the years that life is too short for arguments, etc, but sometimes, I just can't help telling him off.
What can I do now? At the back of my mind, there's always the thought, "What happens if he doesn't return from Afghanistan?" Additional Details Thanks for all your great answers everybody, I am supportive of him serving, I guess I just sometimes wonder if he actually remembers our mum & that's why I got so upset & aggro with him.

Go find him, take him to dinner and explain what you just told us. Treat him like your best friend, not your kid brother. It will be ok.
Best of luck |

First off tell him that you reacted the way you did over concern for him having the problems your dad did. Let him know you had time to reflect on it and realize that he's not the little boy you helped raise any more and you understand his decision even though it worries you. Let him know how much you care about him and tell him you'll respect his decision, but he'll need to respect your right to be concerned about him. Arrange a small outing to visit your parents grave site and talk about old times, new developments in each others life and the future.
If it helps write it in a letter and hand deliver it and extend the offer for the outing again. |

why dont you text him what you just said:
"I wish I could take back what I said, but I know I'm unable to do that.
I've come to realize over the years that life is too short for arguments"
ask for forgiveness, as an older sister it maybe tough, but along with saying you are sorry say the words "plz forgive me, what i did was wrong"
and pray to God almighty that he dosen't go back there to waste his life
best of luck to you |
