The big question here is not what you can do instead of serving, but what you need to do for yourself.
First though about fear. We all know fear. Any soldier that tells you he is not afraid is lying to you and himself.
We all have moments of fear. I remember the first night I spent in hostile Iraq (first Gulf War). Yes I was scared, but I went on and made it through.
It is how we handle that fear. That is the yardstick that measures cowardance. It is not that we are afraid, for we all are, it is how we handle our fear. Do you face your fears, or do you run and hide?
Your choice.

It's very simple. Our country needs not only brave soldiers, but also those who work, in any field, hard, with passion, and with love. |

There are many ways you can serve your country and many ways you can make the world a better place. I know of many people who have joined the Peace Corps or have volunteered for the National Park Service for the summer or have taught inner city youth for a year. I guess it depends on what you are passionate about and how you want to make a difference. Take a look at some of the web sites below to get some ideas. |

There are so many things you could do to serve your country and the world. If you want to help on a scale that would improve society and world crisis consider becoming an ambassador for human and environmental rights.
You need to research and find out which human and environmental rights groups you can join.
some are: groundWork US/UK/SA
Global Anti Incineration Alliance
farm Sanctuary, etc
HIV/cancer awareness groups
World Hunger foundations, etc
This is a more peaceful and productive way of assisting your country opposed to violence and death in the name of service to your country or world. |

Paul what are you more afraid of living or dieing?ever man or woman who has been in combat has been scared.and if they say they wasn't they are lieing.paul you stand a greater chance of dieing on the highway or of a illness than dieing in the military.do not fear the unknown but live today.face your fears or remorse will eat you alive.trust me you were brave enough to admit to us of your fear of the military in my eys it shows courage in admitting it.volunteer at your local V.A. hospital to help our vets.to me these people are heroes |

Become a police officer or a firefighter. Maybe a paramedic. These people serve their communities on a regular basis and are rarely rewarded for it. Wanna talk about heroes? |

Get elected to public office and change the way things are done. Oryou could join the coast guard which I believe sees less actual confrontation. |

You're smart to be afraid. The chances of getting seriously hurt or killed are high. Getting seriously hurt is probably worse, because of the atrocious way soldiers are treated in Walter Reed when they come home. You can volunteer & do community service in your city or town by helping returning soldiers. That is a very immediate need that you can fulfil & get satisfaction from. |
