What can I mail to a soldier overseas?

I was wondering if soldiers in Afghanistan can receive booze? I know that they are not suppose to. But can customs open mail going to soldiers? When I was over in Iraq, a friend sent me a six pack of beer bottles. One of the bottles broke before I got the package and I still received it, soaking wet. So did I just luck out? How can I send my buddy what he needs and make sure it gets to him?

Check with the local veteran's organization. They should not only be able to tell what is prohibited, and what is accepted but also what is highly recommended. Also check with the families of vets organization-that would be very helpful. Wikipedia site may also help. The post office may (should have a list). I'll try to find out for you today. Be sure to package very securely with a list of contents Remember it has to go a long way.

Step 1: Know the rules and regulations for shipping a package to a soldier overseas. Some restrictions apply. See the list of military restrictions on the United States Postal Service website.

Step 2: Wrap whatever you are shipping in strong, reinforced packaging. Packages sent to soldiers overseas travel a long distance and are handled many times. Assure your package will arrive undamaged by using the proper material.

Step 3: Address the package directly to the soldier. Include name and rank. Address it to an Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office (APO/FPO) and include a zip code. A list of military postal codes can be found at the Operation Home Front website.

Step 4: Write a detailed description of the contents of the package on the customs form. Be specific. Do not write simple explanations like "medicine" or "food."

Step 5: Check postal deadlines for sending packages overseas if you are shipping for the holidays. For instance, December 11th is the last day priority mail is sent for arrival before Christmas. Ask at your local post office.
