What can i do to prepare myself for the Marines?
|
I am 16, and joining the Corps later this year when I turn 17. Im in need of physical conditioning. Im 5'9 and 180 pounds. I can run a mile in about 8:30 (very winded afterward) Bench press about 115 pounds, squat 210 pounds, do 30 pushups, and 3 pullups (non dead lift), and can do situps all day without getting tired. I can jump fences and run over obsticals (not well), but I dont feel like I could do it all day without dying. I have no medical history. Im about 30 or so pounds overwieght (very out of shape). What can I do to prepare myself for basic training? I know that the whole point of Basic is to prepare you, but I am willing to do anything within reason to better myself before . Any input is much appreciated. Thank you =)

Glad to help you.
I have been Army Infantry for 5 years. So I know a few ways to prepare for basic training and different types of schools. Here are a few majors things to do for physical fitness.
1. Get used to drinking ALOT of water! This is all you will get while in basic. Water also helps with weight loss and muscle gain, as it pushes the acids out of your muscles so your muscles do not get tired as fast when working them.
2. Do not run for distance. Like setting a goal of 1 mile, or 2 miles.
Run for time. Run as long as possible. Set goals like. I want to run for 20 minutes. For 1 month run 3 times per week and each week run at least 5 minutes longer than the week before. Starting on your 2nd month run 5 days per week. Mon wed fri. run for time. tues and thurs run sprints. a good way to do this is to sprint the light poles in your neighborhood. sprint to one, then walk to the next. and keep doing that. Once you can run for around 25 - 30 mins with out dying. Then start running for distance. Start with 2 miles and work your way down until you are running 2 miles in under 14:30 secs then run 3 miles. always run sprints as it will help you build enough lower body muscles for the longer runs.
3. Push ups, every other day do push ups in the morning and at night.
In the army, the PT test is how many can you do in 2 mins. I "THINK" the marines is 1 minute. I could be wrong here. But before you leave for basic you should be doing around 40 - 50 pushups in 1 minute, and should be able to do a maximum of around 70 with out getting up or hitting your knees. Taking breaks in the "front leaning rest position" is fine. this is when your butt is in the air, but your hands a feet are still on the ground.
(*PRIORITY*) Work on form. Army and Marine push up form can be found online. But form is the best way to practice. Doing 10 push ups in the correct form is WAY WAY WAY better than doing 30 push ups wrong.
Keep working on pull ups. Since you can only do 3 at the moment, do them twice a day or more. once you can do around 15 - 20 non stop and correctly do them once a day.
Since your ok on sit ups, just make sure you can do around 60 in around 1:30 secs.
Dont worry too much about the weight. as long as you can get in you will lose weight in basic. Just work on getting stronger and able to pass the PT test. Ask a recruiter for a copy of the PT test requirements and work on those things. Also, I am sure your recruiter wont mind you going there after school or in the mornings before school and do PT with them.
I really hope this helps. |

You need to lose enough weight to meet height and weight standards of the Marine Corps. After that, getting fit is key. |

you really need to get running, kid. and start lifting weights to get stronger. Im 5'9 and weigh 195. i can run 5 miles without stopping and benchpress 315 pounds. Start working now so bootcamp isnt much of a hassle for you more then it will be. |

hi pal im joining the royal Marines (the british ones) and threes not much difference between us in all honesty all i can advise is what ive done. drop the weights just worry about full body exercises like press ups sit ups pull ups you really need to get your running up to scratch get used to running at least 3 times a week aim to do around a 7.30 - 8.00 min mile for 3-5 miles also if your at a gym try doing good circuit training good c.v and body training
and maybe spinning classes good c.v and a fat burner don't grind your shins into the road its no good going into basic already with a injury
but i wouldn't really bother with weights its not all about size to much muscle will just weigh you down and as ive been told make sure when you go in your as fit as you can humanly get your self keep your gob shut and do everything 100% best of luck |

run run run run... and run.
Not only will it help with your weight, but it is what you will be doing the most in boot camp. I would try to get running 3 miles every day... in a row. You want to be able to run all three in 22 min or less.
One day a week you might try running 5 miles or so straight. You might want to get a weighted vest and do one or two runs a week with that.
Get your pushups higher if possible. You want to be as fit as possible before you leave... it will save you some serious pain later, I promise! |
