Well, it depends on which period of Roman history you look at. Typically, Roman imperial (as opposed to Roman Republic or Roman Kingdom - earlier periods of Roman history) soldiers carried a heavy shield, a short sword and two javelins. Their armor consisted of a segmented iron torso protector with leg greaves to protect the shins, a helmet, and a belt with hanging strips to protect the groin.

The short sword was the primary weapon and Roman Army tactics were built around its use. The javelin was modified by Julius Caesar so that their head was hard metal and the shaft below soft metal with a heavy wooden base. The result was a weapon designed to force opponents to drop their shields rather than kill them. The javelin’s spearhead would puncture the shield and the soft metal would bend under the weight of the wooden part of the shaft. This would prevent the opponent from pulling the javelin out and using it and make their shield heavy and unwieldy – forcing them to drop it.

The solider would then close with the enemy and try to stab him in the gut or chest. The short sword’s 2-inch deep stab wound was more likely to be fatal than a slashing attack. The heavy Roman infantry was supported by various auxiliaries including archers, cavalry (no stirrups yet though), and Allied soldiers (other Italian city states besides Rome proper).

Roman field formations were design to rotate personnel through the front lines and to give each individual soldier sufficient space to use his own sword skills. Unlike early Roman, Greek and other armies – the Imperial Roman Army generally stayed away from mass formations like the phalanx.

A legionary would wear armour made out of metal plates. For further protection he would have a helmet and a large shield made from wood and leather. On his feet he would wear special heavy-duty sandals with iron studs in the soles. A legionary's main weapon was his javelin, which he used to throw at the enemy. He was also equipped with a short sword that could be used in close quarters fighting.
