Tell them that sometimes it is necessary to kill people in order to protect other people. |

if you want to be the best parent, best example you can be, then you would not lie to them. You would give them only the information you know they can handle.
If they are old enough to ask the question, then they are old enough to hear the answer.
However, only you know the age and maturity level of your child and you can decide how much to expand on/ or how to phrase the answer so as not to disturb their mind beyond what they can handle.
You may say "War is a hard subject. Maybe when you are older, we can talk about it more. But, yes, sometimes people do die as the resault of war" |

u tell the truth...cuz they will prolly know ur lying if u tell them that soldiers dont kill pple...or they will find out later anyway |

That reminds me of the quote from an unknown sniper. Asked, "What do you feel when you kill a person?", the response back was, "A slight recoil." |

The Marines have said that we don't kill people, we just make sure that they meet God according to our appointment book. |

Explain that soldiers protect our country from bad people, and yes, sometimes the bad people die, but only because our soldiers care about us so much that they would do anything to protect us. |
|

where is everybody?

not all soldiers kill people. soldiers are like the police. they kill to protect others and have safety for all |

War is a terrible thing and people die in a war. No one wants to kill in a war but sometimes you have to or you will be killed. |

You say that soldiers do everything possible to prevent the loss of life, but sometimes soldiers have to protect themselves and their fellow soldiers from people that wish to hurt them and sometimes they have to make these people die for their country or cause in order to ensure the safety their buddies or themselves. |

I'd tell them yes...but only the bad people that want to hurt the good people. tell the child that its a soldiers job to find the bad people that want to hurt the good people before they do hurt them. |

You tell them the truth. Then they understand about what goes on and realize that sometimes during war that they have a job to do and that they have to defend themselves when put in those positions. You can't sugar coat reality, and there's no point in doing so. |

Tell the child that they only don't kill, however they defend... They defend your right to write what you want... They defend your right to eat out with your family.... They defend your right to life, sometimes losing their own being so selfless as to defend everyone that they care about..... They defend your right to ask your mother or teacher such questions, they defend your right to expand your imagination, your right to learn... Only two people have died so that others may live in freedom, Jesus and Soldiers......... |

Say, "A soldier fights to win wars and make peace. They're not trying to kill people, but in war it does happen; war is dangerous, it's unfortunate. And most soldiers don't fight with guns, some are mechanics, or secretaries, or drivers, people who support the military effort." etc, etc. Of course, this doesn't apply to an army sniper, but there's no need to go into such detail yet. The fact is, most members of the military don't actually kill people. |

There is an extreame difference between killing and murduring. You need to explain this first. |

"Soldiers protect you, they fight the bad guys"
You try to protect the kid until he/she is old enough to understand it- how old is he/she? When i was about 6 i already knew the difference between murder and killing to protect- but then again i was always uniquely insightful about things i really wasn't expected to understand. I always remembered my dad telling me how amazed he was about my ability to understand complicated things like war and how its different than murder.
So it may depend on how well the child's able to understand the difference. If you suspect it's to young to comprehend the difference between murder and killing to protect- then try to steer away, by answering the question- but not in the way they asked.
When the child's older, then you should feel free to tell them more and more, but i don't think anyone really has a right to take away a child's innocent mind at such a young age- let them be a kid and enjoy a carefree life for a while- everyone deserves that much really. |
