Courtmartial him. In other words, he'll be tried by a military court set up by the Marines. Since he didn't desert in combat I'm sure they won't push for the death penalty. They'll probably just give him a DD (dishonorable discharge), but you never know. There's a war on now and they might give him a few years in the brig as a warning to others. |

It all depends. There are two articles of the UCMJ. One is for being ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE, the other is DESERTION. The main difference between the two is the INTENT for leaving without authorization. If he's in the state pen, then the Marines are the least of his worries. That big guy named BUBBA who's looking for a sweetheart is what he has to worry about.
WHEN he returns to society, he needs to contact the Marines. In fact, he should contact them NOW.
Being gone this long already will give him at least some brig time and MAYBE a general or BC discharge. It all depends on his old command or the convening command for his court martial.

I'm glad to see they caught him. This is a nice example of how the military will get you eventually. Sorry to be mean but he deserved what happens to him, he will be spending some time in prison, get an dishonorable discharge and after that his life will be hell. Good luck getting a decent job after that. |

now to answer your question.. in the extreme extreme cases you can get death, but thats highly unlikely. he probably will serve the rest of his service in military jail after being corp marshaled. i hate to say but your cousin has disgraced himself incredibily and now he will get a dishonorable discharge, and when he becomes an inactive Marine (because there are no Ex-Marines no matter how bad they are.) it will be hard for him to get another job since most people look down on dishonorable discharges!! i have no mercy for anyone who goes AWOL so i don't expect his trial to have any either! |

Like everybody else says, jail time. He'll be dropped in rank and for the time he serves will have all pay and allowances with held after which he will recieve a BCD or other than honorable discharge. He will also most likely serve his time Leavenworth prison. Dude he signed the contract and like his DI's probably told him, the fastest way to get out of your time is simply to do your job, finish yuor contract time and go back to the farm when it's all over.Sorry he made a bad decision but now he has to pay the price. |
