i am getting myself a dog tag chain and i was wondering what do people normally write on dog tags? not real dog tags but military dog tags...:-)

It actually varies slightly by Service:
USMC:
Surname
First Name Middle initial, blood group
Social Security Number with no dashes and no spaces
USMC, Gas Mask size (S-small, M-medium, L-large)
Religious preference (or "NO PREFERENCE") or medical allergy if its a red tag
(Red tags are almost always for an allergic reaction to medicine specifically penicillian)
Army:
Surname
First name, middle initial
Social Security Number
Blood type
Religion
Navy
Surname, first name, middle initial
"blank"
Social Security Number with no dashes or spaces followed immediately by branch blood group
"blank"
Religion
USAF
Surname
First name and middle initial
Social Security Number, followed by "AF" indicating branch of service.
