It would be good. Discipline and values need to be instilled in the young. Many parents have failed.
Israel does it, and they don't have nearly as many social problems as we do. |

We did away with the draft and we now have a voluntary military, and it is fine. |

That would be a draft and many Americans enlist every month. If I were 18 I'd do it, mandatory or not.
DO NOT INSULT OUR ARMY!!! They are not in bad shape! |

If you think the army is in bad shape now, just wait til some of the lazy losers have to go into the army that should never be there. I think it's a bad idea, and it would never work here. Our society is way more intricate than those countries that require military service, and we have way more people. |

The Army is doing quite well not having to accept people who do not want to be there. As far as forcing people to enlist, doesn't that defeat the purpose of a democratic society? |

As a veteran I can tell you I'd rather be around people who want to be there than bitter angry people who could care less and despise being there. Besides this is the US a soooo called free county, HA! HA! |

Draft is outty. Been there done that - it's better to get people that are willing and able rather than unwilling and able. |

Yes, I would.
But... There are too many crazy people out there. Some people just don't need to have a gun. |

America, Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Forced Service doesn't seem to agree with that. |

Personally I think it's a ridiculous idea, seeing as I don't believe that females should be in the military at all. |

our volunteer military is the best military in the world. Until something changes, and they need more people, this idea would be disastrous. It would water down and pollute one of the most disciplined, highest moraled armies in history. |

No, people would intentionally hurt themselves or move away, so that they wouldn't have to serve. I know I would cut open my leg or something, or move to England. |

not so good, prior military for 14 yrs, and you don't want everybody. Some people are just not cut out of militry service. Voelnteer is by far the best. You get better soldiers and igher educated levels all around. when it was manditory, you had alot of dis honorable discharges, awols and just plain slackers who caused all kinds of problems. I don't wnat to serve with people who don't want to be there. Yes other countries do, and they got a poor military, I've personally seen it in this country years ago, and inNorway in the 1980's, It just fills slots, and most don't care, or want to be there. I am for a limited war time draft though, but peace time, and just manditory causes a lazy fighting spirit and poor standards of service. Women should never be drafted, sad enough that men have to die, but when we drafting woman to die, our heart as a nation has then gone cold towards our mothers and duaghters, and that is not good, that is why we got so many social problems today, a lack of respect for women to be women, and not allowing men to be men. |

I would hate to have to pay for a 9 million person military.
there are 2 million 18 yr old males
there are 2 million 18 yr old females
there are 2 million 19 yr old males
there are 2 million 19 yr old females
in the US according to the US Census.
We don't have enough military bases to house that many people or train them. |

Ive always thought that should be a requirement.... S. Korea makes it mandatory once you graduate high school, unless they sign up for college.... Even then, once they finish college, they have to do atleast 2 years service... maybe 3.
Ive just always felt that everyone should atleast do 2 years... If not to show pride in your country, but to gain values, discipline, and learn to think under pressure....
So yeah, I agree with you 110% |

I have long felt that this type of service insures that evryone with a say, has done service for the country. I don't think all have to serve in the military. Some could serve as volunteers in the social service of this country. Disaster teams, that would be dispatched when nature shows her wild side. Teachers for the poorer areas of the country. Nursing students could be a peace corp in our own country. In return for thier service, the schooling would be discounted, because they have given this service to thier country. |

No they shouldn't. Because of freedom. Free will. |

Mussolini is proud of you, but think of the society if everyone becomes a soldier. Many people still think and act like soldiers after their army days, so America would have a society full of people lacking conscience, common sense, and critical thought. Well, probably in a militarist nation like the USA there is not much need for intellectuals, but for intelligent teens, who could actually do more worthwhile things than shoot people, it would really be a waste of time. |

i support your idea. America's youth needs discipline and the boost in military forces would be a deterrant to any enemies.
It would also provide America with more pride and give our leaders soemthing to think about before sending troops over seas. I bet our leaders would be less likely to send troops over seas when its their kids in the military. |
|

an_immortal_angel

Absolutely it would work for us! It would not be asking everyone to support whatever conflict we might be in at the time, but to support the troops that risk their lives to defend the freedoms that most Americans take for granted. People don't realize how blessed we as Americans are, but a minimum two year service would cure that. HOOAH! |

yeah, becuase most parents forget how to raise kids latley. the military teaches respect. As far as the guy who said the military is "just fine without volunteers," obvioiusly does not read any news lately. Sure, if parents cant raise kids anymore, somebody needs to |

I think it's a great idea. It might just teach this young generation of gimme gimme gimmes into actually doing something worthwhile besides playing video games and shopping. they need to be taught self respect and respect for others as well as feel pride for their country not just take it for granted as they do now. i think sending them thru boot camp and school would do this or keep them in boot camp until it does sink in. let them help out by going to Iraq and giving our soilders a break to. they are no better than the soilders. i agree with the people above if they go to college great but once they finish its into the military to do their 2 years service. actually i think 4 years would be more appropriate to give them a longer time to adjust. |

I think it would be a great idea. It instills pride, provides job skills, promotes discipline and maturity. |

to those of you who are worried about the losers being in the military.
most get weeded out either by the training or the people in their outfit (get my drift?)
we had a few losers but they got with it or else and they soon learned what "or else" was. |

Maybe a 2-year national service period. People could do disaster-relief duty, peace-corps work or some other form of service. MAYBE a support arm for the military, like ditch-digging or base constructions. However, I am absolutely against a military draft under anything less then a dire, national-survival scale emergency. All volunteer, all the way. |

Great Idea. This idea is way past due. Bring back the draft and get these hoods off the streets. Sure, we have a good Military, but I am old enough to remember the WW2 and all the draftees who saved this countries a**. Don't talk to me about this present military being the best. They may have better equipment, but better men and women, thats a damn stretch. |

sure sounds good to me but its the rich folks that buy their kids out of the service but yeah it would sure help out the already stressed out people in iraq |

I agree with it 100%. The lack of discipline in the young people in our society is overwhelming. Just look at some of the teenagers around your town.
I think that it would instill discipline, work ethic, duty, and integrity to a generation that needs it very much. |

Not a good idea. We need to spend more time in school. These ridiculous wars are why our army is in bad shape. We can't trust our President to send our army to fight for justifiable causes. |
