In times of peace, it would be wrong to criticise any individual for deceiding to exercise their right to join the armed forces of an other country. History is littered with examples of such soldiers of fortune. A prime example of this situation can be found during the Spanish Civil War, when may foreign national joined the socialists in the fight against facism.
In times of war, the isssue takes on a different slant, when the country is an ally then it would not seem inappropriate, the examples of American pilots who joined the RAF in the dark days of the Second World War is one to be praised. If how ever the country is a combatant foe then, then this should considered a treasonous act and should not be condoned. Benedict Arnold is perhaps the best know American who springs to mind. A later example would be Lord Haw Haw, albeit an Irishman who sided with the Nazis against the British in the Second Worl War. |

In most countries, you must be a citizen to be in the army. There is the foreign legion but that is an independent army for hire. You can go fight for Al Queda but that's not a country. |

I think camshy0078 has got the wrong end of the stick. The question is about joing a foreign army, not terrorist organisation.
Most of you think that people join national armies so they can kill people, how very small minded of you. When soldiers do UN duty, thats go to trouble spots of the world under the control of the UN, the soldiers do not carry weapons, and still have to try and keep the peace between waring factions. Also many soldiers are used to supply man power for aide relief operations, search and rescue in national disasters and rebuilding a countries infrastructure when the country has no finance for it. All that is done whilst still being under fire from terrorists, or anti social people who just like anarchy.
The army is also the one who keeps your right to free speach, fights for the democracy you enjoy and keeps your land safe from those who wish to do your country harm.
However some people join an army of another nation, because they wish to emmigrate, have a career change or have a skill that is needed in that nations army. As said above, Britain has soldiers from Fiji, and other places and they are all very good proffessional soldiers, and if sam ahd madu thinks they are cowards, shame on you. What army did you join, brave soldier!!!
sorry for taking over your question. |

It was very common in the early years of WWII for Americans to join the RAF in Canada because they wanted to help. My dad was one of them. When the US came into the war, he came back over to the Army Air Corp.
If someone joins an opposing army, that is treason and punishable by death. |

The foreign legion is not independent - it is part of the French Army, and it is most definitely not for hire.
To answer the question, it kind of depends which two countries one is talking about. If someone from UK joined the US army I'd think they were nuts. If someone from Nepal joined the UK army I'd think they were following a very honourable tradition, and in the process significantly improving their financial prospects. |

If they join the army of a country that's considered to be hostile to their native land then they should never be allowed back in. |

it's everyone's right to fight for who they want to fight for.. why someone would do that is the most important factor |

The United States has 33,000 non-citizens in there military. Congress passed a law a few years ago saying anyone who serves becomes a citizen. But in the United States since there are already 12 Million illegals here the military doesn't have to go far to recruit them. Plus it helps them learn the American way. |

If you join an army of a foreign country you should ensure that they wont come into armed conflict with your own nation. Treason is very real and should be dealt with severely.
British Taliban fighters = Treason!
British born Iraqi insurgent? = Traitor! |

The British Army is full of people who were not born in the UK, especially those from Fiji, the West Indies and certain parts of Africa. They do a bloody good job!
They're not mercenaries, which is a different matter all together.... |
