What do you think would happen if the United States issued a draft for the Iraq War?

I was thinking about what would happen to Americans, and the rest of the world if McCain were to win the election and issue a draft. So what do you think would happen if they were to issue a draft for the Iraq War? Additional Details I was thinking about what would happen to Americans, and the rest of the world if McCain were to win the election and issue a draft. So what do you think would happen if they were to issue a draft for the Iraq War?
*YES I get it, this is a hypothetical question and I understand that it takes more than a President to get a draft going, but I wonder what YOU think will happen to this country and our people if a draft for Iraq were to be issued**

not a big deal to me cause I'm already in the military, oh and the dude that said we are winning the war in iraq, the only way we could win is if we killed everyone in iraq. And if there was a possibility of winning it would have happen 4 years ago. |

If a draft was necessary to meet our military obligations it would be implemented and people would be ordered to serve. If they refused, they would suffer the consequences.....plain and simple. Throughout our history many of our citizens served to preserve our way of life and, in the future, a draft may again be needed.

Republicans are against the draft. It was Regan that abolished it. |

Nothing at all.
A draft does not increase the size of the military.
All a draft does, is allow the military to conscript enough people to meet the manning levels set by Congress,
If there are not enough volunteers.
Since we already have enough volunteers,
Even if we had a draft, no one would actually be drafted.
Even during Vietnam, less than 6 percent of the draft eligible men, were drafted.
To many people assume that a draft means everyone a certain age, has to go into the military.
Thats not how a draft works, nor is it how a US draft has ever worked.
Only Congress can increase the size of the military.
Something they have already done, back in 2004, when they authorized the Army to increase by 70,000 soldiers and the marine Corps by 20,000 Marines. |

Re-institution of the draft would require a law passed by Congress and the President's signature. In 2002 Democrat Charles Rangel tried to get it started. |

The military would have a fit, since they do not want a draft, but like legendaryplanet said if we went to war with a Big power like Russia OR China a draft will be likely . Given that, our military is high tech and requires more intelligence and knowledge than some people who may post here may think ( i.e. the Grandads who protested the Vietnam War). I favor picking recruits those out of our nations Colleges and from Vocational Schools. |

I agree it is a hypothetical question. Unfortunately your hypothesis is not based on anything resembling facts. First of all, recruiting and retention standards for all branches have been met or exceeded each year since the attack on America. Secondly, there will be a phased withdrawal of U.S. forces out of Iraqi cities over the next few months as Iraqi Security Forces take over. Third, you peg your hypothesis on the election of Senator McCain to the Presidency. Since Senator Obama is a Democrat and the author of the latest attempt to reinstitute the draft is also a Democrat (Congressman Charles Rangel of New York), it is much more reasonable to assume that a Democratic President with a much larger Democratic majority in the Congress would be of great value in bringing back the draft as a way of honoring the pledge to create more jobs. |

Since the end of the Vietnam war where the draft was abolished, there has been rumors and discusions about restarting the draft, BUT! It has always been counter productive.
So far the standing army's of the USA have always been smarter, stronger, and more capable to perform the tasks they are required to do because the people who enter the services choose to do so. Statistically speaking A Soilder of today are way more competent to complete a mission with less casualties then their drafted counterparts of the armies of our past.
As for the draft. If congress decided to reinstate a draft I would support it, But I would feel it to be a seriously stupid action. I support the notion that a person is more well rounded and more capable and disiplined with a few years serving in the military, But I also believe the military is better when people choose to enlist or not, and to try and find the job or military specialty that suits them.
I also must admit the USA has way to many "individuals" who feel it is ok for someone else to do the dirty work of keeping the freedoms we have, and that if we "give them up" in one way or another the world would thank us and atempt to live with us instead of trying to destroy us as many or our enemies and some of our allies are choosing to do now... My answer to that is based on history... Workd War 2... We give into a tyrant demands or wishes so he will be appeased. He will wants more and when we get tired of giving, He Will TAKE! or attempt to... Freedoms are not free, they are paid for. Deplomacy works most of the time, when it fails what are our other options?
If a draft is required to accomplish those other options...Im sorry, my belief is that a few sacrifices are preferable than a complete loss of my freedom or those of my family. I do not want a draft...but the bill for my freedom is and has been high... Ive spent over 20 years helping to pay it, I have many friends who are helping to pay it... My father, grandfathers, and great grandfathers before me as well as my father-in-law, and all my spouses grandfathers and many of our uncle's and great uncle's have all seen the cost and pitched in to pay the bill...
I will paraphrase: All those who enjoy the freedoms of our nation seldom feel as free and empowerd as do those who have helped to preserve those freedoms, and have seen the cost first hand and up close...
Again, NO! Im not for a draft, but if it happens.................Ill support it.

Nobody is talking about a draft except liberal lawmakers and election specialists, who want their little voting sheep to get scared... it's a way to secure the votes they want. So.. I refuse to buy in to their "What if" propaganda machine... it just stirs people up.. and fear is the worst basis for a voting decision.
There is no need for a draft, because the recruitment numbers are right where they need to be. Go on defenselink.com and check out the recruitment stats of our all-volunteer army. |

I think they should have initiated the draft when the war started. The public outcry would have been SO LOUD that the war would have ended years ago.
Wasn't it Charlie Rangle that tried get the the draft started for this very reason?
I personally believe all young Americans should be required to serve a 2 year stint in either the military or a civilian corp similar to the CCC as they do in Israel. It would be a great 'growing up' tool before work or advanced education; those young people who had lived lives of privilege would get to know how the other half lives, and those underprivileged would emerge on a more level playing field.

well first of all Mccain can not issue a draft by himself, he need congress and all that.
and there will not be a draft for the iraq war, we will not start draft to establish iraq government that is for the volunteers. remember thats what the military is made up of.
now if we were to go to war with russia, it would be likely to happen
But i dont think the draft would be a bad thing, our men can fight a war, people will die, but if thats what it takes to win a war then so be it. i am glad our gov't has the power to tell our men they can fight for their country. it is a sacrifice to make a larger military and a good one,
But then i am a army recruit and recommend the military to everyone. |
