If your talking about the Afgan was, in my opinion all Canada gains is better foreign relations with other Nato countries. You could also argue that it is to fight terrorism, however Canada has never been and will probably not be a target for terrorism. So unlike other countries (you know who Im talking about) Canada contributes to other country's causes.
