Kenya has had a stable government for 45 years, some of you need to check your facts again. It is Somalia that has not had a government for 17 years. Kenya's Military is among the best funded, and best equipped in sub Saharan Africa. The Russian T72 Tanks are meant for the Kenya Army to repalce the old Vickers MK 3 that have been in use since mid 70s.
The Kenyan Military is undergoing a rearmament and Modernization program to enable it cope with new challenges and safe guard its National Security and National Interests. The 38 T72 Tanks are part of a larger shipment of over 100 Tanks, ZU - 23 (2A13) Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun, RPGs Armored personnel Carriers among other military equipment some of which are already in Kenya.
The hijacked ship was part of 3 ships from Ukraine with assorted military hardware for the Kenyan Military 2 of which have already docked in Mombasa, Kenya. |

I'm sure it's their new SUV. :) It'll make the commute back and forth to work and finding a parking spot a little easier...just run right over those pesky cars. |

The Ukrainians had spare tanks. The Kenyans (sp?) had extra foreign aid. A match made in ... well, you get the idea. Sounds like fun doesn't it? Ramming around in the bush in a tank?
Maybe they thought Somali pirates could put them to a good use.
Doug had a few comments to make about it if you want to surf over to Doug's Darkworld blog.

To replace their fleet of obsolete Vickers Mk3 tanks. Why does Kenya need tanks in the first place? It's a question of national defence and interests.
The Kenyan military is actually one of the better funded and professional forces across Africa, with close ties to the United Kingdom. Given the frequent attacks by Somali raiders and Kenya's good history of peacekeeping, it's in the best interests of everyone for Kenya to continue modernizing and increasing their military capability. |

Definately for her defence! we live in a crazy place with terrorists from somalia and beyond thinking every day is Guy Fawkes day by blowing everything up! hope the tanks reach safely and we can then show them a thing or two! |

I heard a theory they in fact were not stolen, but "received" by their Somali customer. Because legal weapons supplies to Somalia are not possible, arranging a "transit shipment stolen" could be a convenient loophole. Just a theory though... |

To look tough, but you have to be extremely disciplined to use a tank in a hot country like Kenya. Chances are the tank crew will get like 8 hours of training because that's all Kenya can afford. Then the tank crew will keep all the hatches open and try to stick their bodies out where they can try to keep cool. Of course their tank will probably break down at some point and they will just let the tank sit there and rot.
My opinion is based on a battle between Chad and Libya around the late 1980s. Chad attacked a Libian base in Chad and the Libians never bothered to get in their tanks and helicopters even though they had dozens of tanks and armored helicopters on that base. The army from Chad just used Toyota trucks to take the base. |

genocide, why else would they want them? thats how they get off over there, nasty fools. i hope its for homeland security, but most likely they are trying to silence a slow building revolution, or prey uppon a subordinate tribe. theres not much else for them to do out there, so they kill eachother all the time. i saw a guy get beaten to death and left on the road in zimbabwe when i was 13. he shorted the take from the minibus, and was caught stealing. the two other owners of the van explained to us that he was stealing from the mouths of their children and it was unexcusable. its dog eat dog in africa no doubt, if i were in charge somewhere there i would at least need tanks. i would invest in an airforce first though. and then tank and anti tank weaponry. |

Well according to the The Nation "The country (kenya) has not had an effective national government for 17 years", that might be one reason why. The country also has refuges flooding in and rebel force running a muck in the country. Plus, every firist world country on the planet has tanks, so why can't a third world nation have some. |

Kenya needs them to maintain a secure border which is one of the mandates of the Kenyan army.
The tank crews received years of high grade training.
The tanks were paid for by Kenyan taxes, not foreign governments.
Rebels are not running a muck in Kenya, the closest thing to rebels we get is when Somali militants cross over the border and kill their own in the northeastern most part of Kenya. This is also one of the reasons hundreds of thousands of soldiers were sent there a while ago. |
