I'm in NJROTC (Navy) in high school and I've been in it my entire four years, I realize that when I go to college that their ROTC is completely different from what I'm used to. I'm going to Eastern Kentucky University, and they have an Army ROTC, so what does it take to get into that, what are the benefits, and what does it require?

It doesn't take a whole lot if you just want in. Mainly its just some small tests (push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile, army physical, and eye check-up) and some paper work. If you want a scholarship from them then you are going to want to excel as much as possible during all the testings and interviews. Some say the scholarships are highly competitive but in my case not so much (the battalion has 50 members, 8 of which are freshman. Oh and we all got scholarships). It may depend on each school's ROTC program (I'm not too sure about that part).
The benefits are potentially having the ARMY pay for either your tuition or room and board (if you get a scholarship). Plus you would get a monthly stipend that starts at $300 a month during your freshman year and ends at $500 a month your senior year. Of course one of the main reasons to take ROTC is to become a 2LT upon graduation.
The ROTC requires dedication and responsibility. You have to show up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (at least in my battalion), early in the morning for PT. PT can consist of many things but most commonly it is sit-ups, push-ups, and running. LOTS of running (I ran over 5.8 miles this morning). Additionally you have a military science class in which you learn tactics and military etiquette and such. Then you also have a lab for the class in which you put what you learned into practice. Don't worry about the class, it is a one credit humanities class which is basically a guaranteed A (seriously, just show up you get an A). Plus once or twice a semester you have FTX's (Field Training Exercises). It is a great experience, a lot of fun, and very educational IF you are willing to participate.
Hope this helps. Send me a message if you need anything else. Good Luck! |

I'm a college student who is transferring to Ole Miss and I have never had any experience in ROTC, but I am looking to become a member this upcoming spring semester. Tuition at Ole Miss is very expensive. My question is, what does it take to receive these scholarships that they have to offer? My GPA is currently a 3.583. Will I be qualified for a scholarship with this GPA or are there more things that will affect me being eligible? |
