Not sure what the current requirements are to volunteer for SF because it has been a long time since I have done that. I think you have to be at least an E4 for enlisted or an O2 promotable for officer, GT score of 110 or higher, and be eligable for at least a secret level security clearance. Thats what the requirements were in 1999.
The SF Engineer SGT (18C) is in charge of all explosives and demolition jobs on a Special Forces A-Team. All members of the A team know the basics, how to build C4 charges and Det cord charges. But the Engineer is the real expert on that stuff. They are also experts in construction. Anything that needs to be built from a modification to a vehicle or an entire building constructed the Engineer takes care of it. They also handle all of the matters of supply for the team. Inventories, orders for new equipment, repair of equipment. The Engineer does all of that which means he usually has to do more paperwork than anyone else on the team.
