What does the navy do?

What is the purpose of the navy (in detail)? What are some tasks frequently done by the navy? What should one expect if enlisting in the navy? Is the navy involved in actual combat? Thank you very much.

The Navy provides (primarily) forward-deployed operations from the sea in support of peace and stability around the world. We focus on maritime security, power projection, deterrence, sea control, humanitarian aid and forward presence. We provide amphibious platforms to launch Marines and aircraft, patrol the waters to protect merchant shipping from piracy, assist vessels and nations in distress (tsunamis, hurricanes, etc), ensure the security of necessary resources (like oil platforms), provide combat air support to troops on the ground and much more. Many Navy Sailors are on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, either with Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams or as Individual Augmentees serving with the Marine Corps and Army. Many others are deployed on ships around the world, ready to respond at a moment's notice. The Navy is an extremely versatile service that has many different parts. If you enlist, expect to be gone from home frequently, either for training or deployment. Expect to work hard, sometimes for long hours, and expect to learn a lot about your particular job through on-the-job training with a more experienced person. |

There are 2 sectors of the Navy. Blue Navy are the sailors that are on the ships. They go out and do what's called sea trials which involve training for sea and air attacks if they are not already involved in them. The Navy is also the largest taxi service in the world. We ship man power and fire power to the drop points to send to the frontlines along with humanitarian supplies. Then you have Green Navy. That's the sector I am with. We are shore based personell who maintain homeports and the like. And yes, there are many sailors who have seen or are in combat as we speak. For example you have your SEALS, EOD (Explosive Ordinance Desposal) just to name a couple. |

I like MVR's answer. Pretty much to the point.
Note to futureMarine: if you should happen to make it, you will change your tune soon enough. That Medic who patches you and your buddies up is a Navy Corpsman.
I served on one of those amphibious ships MVR mentioned. |
