What exactly does sea duty in the Navy mean?

My boyfriend is training to be a aviation structural mechanic in the navy and a lot of people are telling me that he will most likely get a lot of sea duty. I was wondering what that means! Like how long will he be out at sea? When they port do they come back home or port some where else? How often do they get to call from the ship? Do they get shore duty after having sea duty? Any other information that you can give me about this will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!

You need to speak to your boyfriend.

EDIT Whats with the thumbs down, he should be the best to ask, as he is going to be doing it shortly.

"Sea duty" means being attached to a sea-going command such as a ship or air wing. Depending on what type of aircraft he works on, he could deploy on an aircraft carrier, cruiser, destroyer, frigate, or amphibious ship. Deployments are usually 6 months long with 12-18 months between deployments, but between deployments the ship will get underway for training and the air det or air wing may or may not have to go with them.

Sailors rotate between sea & shore - usually the 1st sea tour is 5 years followed by a 3-year shore tour.

Here's how it goes: Every job in the Navy has a 'sea-shore' rotation. As A Firecontrolman mine was 4/3 respectively. NO this does not that for the sea rotation you will be away for the entire 4 years. A ships rotation (in port/at sea) fluctuates, but in general terms it's a 6 month deployment followed by 12-18 month in port. While in port the Navy is pretty much like any other job. You go in, in the morning and go home at night. You will have a "duty day" every 4, 6 or 8 days where your hubby will have to spend the night on the ship. When the sailor completes his sea duty they then go to shore duty. No under weigh time, pretty much a regular job.

Before I get a bunch of naysayers...let me say again that these time frames are just a guide line and can be changed to fit the Need of the Navy, or the Nation.

Edit:...ENS... Do you really feel qualified to answer this question? My sea pay was nearly 500$ a month how do you explain that? Chief = a lot of sea time = $$

All others: Sea pay increases as you increase sea time

USN ENS
Sea duty is an additional pay ($200/mo) which is payable after 30 days at sea/underway. A sea tour is when he is assigned to a ship that could go underway for 2 days to 8 months at a time. A shore assignment is likely after a few years at sea. He'll either be on a amphib or aircraft carrier most likely. He could also be assigned IA or GSA where he'd work on Army helos in Iraq/Afganistan. That's not as bad as it sounds.

It depends if he gets assigned to a squadron or a ship.

If he is attached to a ship he will go with the ship throughout the training cycle. Many underway. 1 to 3 weeks at a time. When the ship isn't out to sea the work hours are like an extended normal job (7am -6pm). When the training cycle is done it will be time to go on deployment. Deployments are from 6 to 9 months.
If he gets a squadron the he will be with the aircraft. Squadron life is great. Its like a day job. Go to work in the morning and he gets to go home almost every day. When it is time to deploy, the squadron will board the ship and the aircraft will fly on board and the fun begins.

He will have to do his sea duty for 4-5 years until he will be eligible for shore duty.

When the ship pulls into port it pulls in to get supplies and let the crew relax and experience the culture, sites etc.. It is not a permanent change of home port. It is just a visit.

When the ship is out to sea he will nat have allot of time to call you. The lines at the pay phones are long and the do not always work. It's expensive to use the phones too. It costs about a dollar a minute.

Huh...Sea Duty...
Bet it means that you are aboard a ship at sea...

From home port he'll have some short cruises. 2 weeks. But when deployed he'll be gone 6 months to a year. They will port all over the world. Sometimes they'll get 2 or 3 years of shore duty, but not always.

Get ready to not see a whole lot of your BF. Just a heads up.

Being in the Navy means just that, going to sea. All personal in the Navy generally get assigned to a ship and then go with the ship wherever it goes until he is out of the Navy or gets a permanant land assignment. Where will the ships go ? Half the time, even the commander doesn't know until he puts out to see and opens his orders. Need to know basis. Shore leave, of course, but it is usually wherever the captian puts in and allows the men off the ship. Navy personal also get 30 days a year leave , and can always go home for that time period. How long out at sea ? Depends on too many things to even think about. Assignment, problems, etc..

maga man
dont trust that ***** sea duty means when u get raped u cant say that or ui get your *** kick on the bout and thay moniter what u type or send out so feel sorry for him D=
