So, we built the atomic bomb, which killed a bunch of people. We built the hydrogen bomb, which killed a bunch of other people. Now what? Kill more people?

you mean neutron bomb, protons have no mass. The idea behind these devices is that they can destroy all organic matter in the area without significant dammage to facilities and infrastructure. But that's just the info they've declassified, imagine the crap they're not telling us about. |

I think the accomplishment America is looking for is the sense that we'll all sleep better at night knowing that the most destructive military weapon known to man is defending us. Or possibly even higher standing in the world arms race?

Technological and Warfare advancement is what keeps us at the top. How often do we really have to use those devastating things? Fortunately, just knowing they're there is enough to keep our enemies at bay...until they come up with their own weapons. Also blowing things up is cool...and it's not just a "guy thing".
