What happened to Neutron Bombs?

I know that the US planted a line of neutron bombs in the former Soviet Satellites during the Cold War, but there hasn't been much news about them since then, at least not that I know of. The kind of nuclear bombs that destroy buildings and other structures receive plenty of media coverage though, especially when another nation at odds with the US develops the technology. However, it would seem to be that neutron bombs pose a much greater danger to the public since they can be carried in a suitcase and cause major loss of life. I'd just like to know why this weapon has faded from public view.

The neutron bomb was carried by the Pershing missile and was designated the W85.

They were based in Western Europe, Germany mostly I think. Since the Soviets controlled the satellites they would never have allowed any of our weapons in those countries.

They have all been removed from Europe and I believe disassembled.

If not taken apart they are at least no longer attached to any missile.

Note that the neutron weapon was not small enough to be considered a "suitcase" bomb.

The US never built any neutron bombs.

They were designed, but never built.

A "neutron" bomb was propaganda/false information thing we were fed to make the Soviet Union spend there time and money trying to build there own and added another tool to the M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) defense program. What we were calling a neutron bomb was nothing more then a limited yield nuclear explosion, where the explosive power was limited but it put out huge qualities of radiation which killed everything that was living,something along the lines of a "dirty bomb" but our claim was that as soon as we used a "neutron" bomb we could walk right in and start using all the equipment that was left unharmed, which was far from the truth but we didn't let them know that. As far as the suitcase bombs, I guess someone with a good deal of know how could get a hold of a small nuclear artillery round or the detonator from a bigger one and set it off but.....to transport it someone would have to be able to hide the decaying Signature from it from our satellites which would be a very hard thing to do just to start with. Nuclear threat from a individual or terrorist is very small, for the problems with transportation and deployment chemical or biological would be much easier and effective.

The idea behind the Neutron Bomb was the initial Soviet Tank invasion was going to be so massive into Europe. If we nuked them all there would be total destruction. The neutron bomb would provide an alternative.

The Chinese are believed to have tested a Neutron Bomb during the 1990's.

The concept of an air burst bomb that only killed living things and not destroy buildings etc......was just to horrible.....so we signed some treaties and took them out of service.

GREG....Sorry son .....you do not know of what you speak..... I have handled "suitcase nuclear devices" (SADM).....they exist......and the Soviets have them also ( not as good as ours but they have them)
