What happens if your Navy ship is decommissioned?

Ok my boyfriend is in the navy and he is a Machinery Repairman in Newport News, Va. His ship is the USS Enterprise. But he told me that the ship is being decommissioned. I jus wanted to know what will happen to him? Since he is a machinery repairman will he jus be assigned to shore duty or will they assign him to another ship?

He goes on deployment in may 0f 2010. And his deployment wil be for either 6-8 months, And that will make a year and 7 months for him being in. His contract is 5 years

I served on two ships which were decommissioned: USS Currituck,AV-7, and USS Bon Homme Richard, CVA -31.
We tied up at Mare Island in California and prepped the ship for decommission - removing some electronics gear,painting and preserving the rest.
Then the ship's company was reassigned to other vessels. |

Could go either way, no way to tell until the orders come in.

Depends on how long he's been at sea, how much time left on his enlistment, etc.
He could wind up shoreside or be transferred to another ship. |
