A good example is Bosnia in 1995.
The UN Peacekeepers were not allowed to fire unless fired on, were not authorised to move unless allowed by the warring Factions, had to stand by and watch a massacre of civilians. When NATO's IFOR (Implementation FORce) took over we were allowed to fight our way through checkpoints if required.
All quite stupid really as by the time IFOR was in place the war was over!

NATO is an alliance organization that is meant to go to war in the defense of its member states. The UN, conversely, is an organization meant to avoid war altogether. However, both organizations have worked together to promote peace. |

NATO was created as a direct answer to the Iron Curtain, specifically the U.S.S.R. It is made up of European nations (and now a few ex-Iron Curtain ones) and is a mutual aid pact -- an attack on any member nation is an attack on all (or that is the theory -- obviously it isn't really the case).
The UN is a big "Bash America" group, made up of mostly tyrannical regimes, despots, kletocrats and others. UN "Peacekeeper" do not do that, since they won't even fire their guns. |
