What is a good military career for me?
|
I want to enlist in an armed force (Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Marines), but am not sure which one. I am enlisting to become a more disciplined, stronger person, to gain and learn career skills, and for adventure and an escape from a bland normal life. I dont really want to be in alot of fighting though. I like ships and I also like the thought of being on a large aircraft carier at sea. I also enjoy mechanics. If you could help me decide what is a good choice and plan of action for my career that would be really great. thank you.

If you want to get disciplined and stronger join the MARINES. If you dont want to be fighting then avoid the Marines, Army and Army Nat Guard. From everything you said, it sounds like you'd like the Navy. Even if you get deployed to Iraq while your in the Navy, the closest you'll come to the fighting in about 60 miles of the coast.
Me I am a Marine and I am going over, but I'm not scared.

I would encourage you to sit down with every single one (Service Recruiters), and do whats right for you. I did the same thing before i joined back in 1982 and decided after that. They all have different programs, different training availible both combat or technical and it comes right down to whats the right fit for you. And early congrats, I enjoyed the military very much and would do it again in a heartbeat! |

My opinion is that you are leaning more towards the Navy or Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard is a rewarding career choice. You will gain strong leadership skills and discipline in the coast guard . Never a dull moment with the coast guard , so that would take care of that adventurous streak. You will accomplish great things with the coast guard and it builds character.
(You generally stay on home soil too )
Don't like fighting? Don't pick the Marines or army. Air force will see some too.

If you love Aircraft, then the Air Force is for you. Don't wanna be in a lot of fighting? Fix the Birds for the Jet Pilots. Like Mechanics? Try Jet Engines, Airframes, Hydraulics, Life Support. The Marines won't let you choose a field to work in, they just make you a Marine. Army has no fixed wing aircraft to speak of. Ditto Coast Guard. Lifestyle on an Air Force Base is second to none for young enlisted folks. Go take your ASVAB test and see if you qualify! |

I think the Navy is better and safely, I thinking about enlisting in the Navy myself. |

Any of the branches of service will allow you to become a more disciplined and stronger person. Each one is also very different . I joined the Army ( I just completed my enlistment in March of this year) because my husband also wanted to go active duty Army. I was a communications Sergeant, so I was in the mix allot. My husband is still in Active service and is a mechanic. He loves it and gets to work on allot of different types of vehicles. The Army has over 100 jobs to choose from, so they can pretty much meet whatever someone wants to do. The other branches of service also offer ALLOT of possibilities as well, but the Navy may be more to your liking if you are looking for something specific, like working on ships. The Navy is great ( my dad retired from the navy after 25 years) and will have allot more in depth jobs that revolve around ships. The Air force is also top notch ( I am currently in the Air Guard) as the Marines. I have had the opportunity to work closely with each of the branches of service. My last tour was in a place where everyone actually worked together so it was great! Talk to you recruiter and find out what kind of bonuses, duty stations of choice or educational benefits they can offer you! Good luck to you and thank you for deciding to serve your country. It is well worth it! |

Well then how about an avionics technician on an aircraft carrier. I think the Navy is a fine choice. |

Go to the USAF, In the four years i was in, i got a very good technical education, worked with good guys and state of the art aircraft. the last job i did before retiring is fabricate three sets of actuator simulators for the F22 raptor, as a private contractor for the folks that design the fly by wire system. lot more interesting than punching a keyboard. look at the hour episode on the history channel. that was us. serve your God, honor your parents and serve you country as long as its legal, live by the ten commandments. cuz the big guy really does exist. |

Well if you want to avoid combat MOS's (which is ok, not everyone can handle our stresses), and you said you enjoy mechanics, all services need mechanics, if you want to work on vehicles(wheeled or tracked) go army or marines, for airplanes and to be on boats go navy, or just airplanes and not have to be on a boat for long tours be in the airforce. I am in the army and I know our mechanics love what they do and one of them just got out of the army and is now working for a government contracting company making about 30 bucks an hour! |

I'd say a civil engineer for the armed forces. Or a computer technician. Or a vehicle repair man. If you like working w/ planes I'd study for some background information on Ships and Planes and some basic repair skills for cars. Then you'd have an idea and a place to start when joining the navy. Good Luck!! I also appreciate your willingness to go fight for our country! |

Being an Aviation mechanic will get you on an aircraft carrier quick and when you get out you can make a lot of money at that job too. And being in the Navy you will see a lot more of the world than in any other branch of service. |

NAvy. Study really hard for the ASVAB then take it when your 100% positive youll do great then youll be able to choose any job you want with a high enough score. Good Luck. Marines are the most disciplined. |

My brother has had a good experience in the Coast Guard. He is currently a helicopter mechanic. Previously, he was involved in some exciting rescues and has had the opportunity to be stationed in some interesting places. The Coast Guard improved his life and character, but also allowed him to have a job in the military that doesn't cause his family a lot of stress or worry. Definitely speak to some recruiters as well. Congratulations on having such great goals for your future, and good luck.
(My father is also in the Navy, but his job is very different from what you are seeking, so I don't know anything about what your options are in the Navy.) |

There are lots of careers that involve mechanics. Theres Aircraft mechanics, Automotive and heavy Equipment mech., Heating and cooling mech., Marine Engine (except for Air Force), Powerhouse mech, etc. They typically specialize by the type of equipment that they maintain. Aircraft mechanics inspect, service and repair helicopters and airplanes, Automotive and heavy equipment mechanics maintain and repair vehicles like jeeps, cars, trucks, ranks, missile launchers, combat vehicles, etc. They also repair bull dozers, power shovels, and other construction equipment. Heating and cooling mechanics install and repair air conditioners, refrigeration and heating equipment. Marine engine mechanics repair gasoline and diesel engines on ships boats, and other water craft. They also repair shipboard mechanical and electrical equipment. Powerhouse mechanics install and repair electrical and mechanical equipment in power generating houses. You sound like you might like the Navy. The ASVAB was designed specifically to measure an individual's aptitude to be trained in specific jobs. So if you know about mechanics you may score well enough to be one. |

If you want to be part of something in a tight community, then go coast guard. The 4 other options you have listed have huge numbers of people where as the coast guard, if you are good, then other people in the coast guard will know your name. Army espicially, there are so many people that you will easily get lost in the shuffle and you probably wont be a huge part of any one operation. most of my relatives(there are quite a few) have perferred The coast guard. You are intrested in mechanics, you could help repair of engineer new ideas for ships and you could really be part of something good. whatever feild you choose, thank you for serving. |

I think the Marines Would Be a good choise, my cousin was in it she was a Sgt. And my Husband is Currently in the Army and i think it's kinda dumb. But I'd Recommend Talking to All of them and a word of advice talk to people who are in each of those and i dont mean the higher ranked people cause they can act very stupid cause they think there better than you. (sorry if I offended any one) |

The only way you can be sure to make the right decision for yourself is to visit the recruiters of each branch. They will assess you and determine what you would be good at. It all depends on what openings they have in any given area that you qualify for. You don't usually have the exact choice you want. Sometimes they deviate a smiggit to fit the needs of the armed forces but most times it comes close. In any event, visit all branches before deciding and after you decide, go with it and be the best you can be at it. Good luck |

My dad was Army, my husband Air Force, and my brother is career Navy. I'd say Air Force if you are serious about becoming more disciplined and stronger - it is a tougher boot camp, and I think a tougher program. However, if you want to be on a ship, go either Navy or Coast Guard. The Navy is great, but right now you could easily be deployed to the Middle East with either Air Force or Navy, and almost certainly with the Marines. My brother has done 2 tours in Iraq, and may be going again. About the only thing you can be fairly sure you will be working on a ship and not deployed would be the Coast Guard. Whatever you do, realize that if you enlist, you may have to go to war, and if you really don't want to do that, don't enlist. If you do, thanks for stepping up and answering the call of duty. |

the air force is one of the hardest to get into , the army is one of the easyest roockie starter , marines are under the air force , navy is right on top of the army |

honestly, I'd go coast guard. if you like boats, and mechanics. then that would probably be a safe bet. I'm sure they have just as much career training as the other branches of the military too. |

It sounds like you are looking for a career in the Navy or Coast Guard. I have heard from someone in the Navy you learn firefighting skills in boot camp, which sounds to me like a fall back that is far from bland when you retire from the Navy.
Also, you can usually talk to a recruiter from one branch, tell them up front you have not chosen their branch, and they can help you find what you are looking for. |

i've been in the Army now for almost 7 years (active-duty), and i must say it has been a rough years. i'm currently on my second combat deployment, and if you're thinking about signing with the Army, take a momment to think about what you'll be getting into. First of all, the Army recently (within the last week), has approved 15 month deployments as the new standard for all Soldiers going over to Iraq and Afghanistan. keep in mind that there are many Soldiers out there who are already on their 2nd or 3rd deployment (such as myself), and there seems to be no end in sight when we'll be pulling out of these two countries. and yes, there are soldiers still in Afghanistan! people seem to forget about the real war on terrorism because the media mainly focuses on iraq. The army job in the states isn't a difficult job, but when your deployed, you often find yourself working 16-18 hour workdays, anywhere from 6-7 days out of the week. the money isn't bad, but it never stacks up against the U.S. civillian contractors who aren't doing any more than us, and often pull in 100,000+ annual salary. plus, if you're looking for a firefight, think again. firefights in iraq are a thing of the past considering most soldiers that are wounded or killed in iraq are a result of the shrapnel from roadside bombs, not bullets fired from AK-47's. and for the critics out there, i did not say all soldiers in iraq are killed from roadside bombs, read between the lines.
The pay isn't that great in the military, but it puts food on the table, and you'll definitely be covered for medical and dental issues. if you wanna stay in the states, don't sign up with the Army or Marines, because a deployment to Iraq is almost guaranteed. my suggestion would be to sign with the Navy or Coast Guard. there are navy sailors that deploy to iraq and afghanistan, but looking at the overall navy, your chances of coming here are slim. nonetheless, the Navy and Air Force only do 6 month rotations to these countries, or less. so again, my suggestion to you would to look into the coast guard and see what they have to offer |
