What is it like for young women in the coast guard?

I am 19 years old and a freshman in college for nursing,i like it but i want to travel and see things. My mind has been set on the military since i graduated high school,but im just not sure what to do,the recruiters make everything seem ok,but i want to know more than just the good stuff.Can any women tell me what i am in for?

I joined the uscg at 17, right out of high school.
I've loved it so far. no, it's not all marshmallows and rainbows. but if you are looking for something different, uscg is it.
i've been enlisted for 3 years now, and i've learned how to do minor maintenance on outboard engines, check some one's heart rate, drive a 23 footer and a 378, use a sound powered phone, use an engraver, make an excel spreadsheet, order supplies, splice line, what goes into getting a ship underway, how to stand a proper watch, what to eat when seasick, proper radio protocol, how to fix a faulty wire connection and much, much more.
i've worked til ten and risen again at four for watch, worked for a CMAA, spliced wet cold line until my fingers almost fell off, worked a summer of fourteen hour days back to back, made some of the best friends of my life.
what are you in for? tedious work. hard work. a steady pay check, full health benefits. responsibility (lots).
a ship's watch crew is often made up of those between 18-25. there are many times during the course of the day that the ships safety and security lies in the hands of those who can't even legally drink in our country yet. something else, huh?

It can be great, but it is a structured life. It will be totally different depending on where you are stationed though. Could be the difference between alaska and hawaii... |
