I believe a hydrogen bomb, a "fusion" bomb, works by fusing hydrogen atoms together. It is far more powerful than a "fission" bomb, which splits uranium or plutonium to produce energy. In fact, some (or all?) hydrogen bombs use an atom bomb as a "trigger" for the fusion reaction.
Hydrogen bombs are definitely more powerful, potentially. The largest explosion is believed to have been the "tsar bomb" exploded by the USSR around 1960. The force was about 60 megatons.
So hydrogen bombs are stronger, but actually smaller bombs are more favored. Nuclear explosives are essentially spherical charges - so, say, a 20 megaton bomb would "waste" a lot of its energy because it would go into the atmosphere - the sphere is so large. I believe the military favors relatively smaller bombs - maybe "only" hundreds of kilotons, or less - since the bulk of the explosion is still close to the target and doesn't just dissipate into miles of air.

The first nuclear weapons were -fission- weapons. They worked by atoms of uranium splitting to form two atoms of lead and also releasing energy. Those were 'atom bombs'. The next generation were -fusion- weapons and were much much stronger. They worked by two atoms of hydrogen fusing to become an atom of helium, releasing more energy in the process. That was the 'hydrogen bomb'.
In fact fusion bombs make no radioactive fallout! But the only way to set one off is to use a fission bomb as a detonator. |
