What is the best career to choose in the army that would help good promotion chances.?

Well here is my story, I am 30 years old just passed my physical, scored a 119 on my ASVAB. I will be sworn into the Army Reserve next week. I am looking to get a some good experience out of this, as well as help my country to my capability. I was told by my recruiter to go in as 21W wich is Carpentry/Mason because that is my civilian job and go to school and get my BA. once this is acheived I am looking for a age waiver so I can attend OCS and or WO training. does this seem possible or do I have false hopes and should I choose a different path.

The reason for choosing Carpentry/mason is that. Where I live there are only 5 job choices where I live. I just want to pick one that I know, and go to school and become an active soldier eventually. I was going active, but was talked into staying where I live and going to school.

Grunt. There are a lot of them and they are always getting killed. That is how many became officers in WWII and Korea.

If that is the field you want to pursue do it. Get your degree and go to OCS. That is your best chance for promotion in the Reserves.

It is ironic that the National Guard meant little during Vietnam, and the reserves meant nothing. You just had to stay in them until you had a combination of 8 years and your service was up.

Of course we had a draft where many of our KIA's came from!

Well if you are 30 and already a Carpenter/Mason, something must have gone seriously wrong to wake up and join the service. I hope you didn't get all jazzed about the ASVAB scoring. My dog could ace the ASVAB exam. You might want to back off from the recruiter also. They are paid to fill holes and you might find yourself building cement outhouses in Iraq.

How much is the Army guaranteeing to pay for college when you get out? Whoops? Was that a bad question with a zero answer? It sounds as if you are planning to go for your BA while IN the Army???

I would recommend a serious investigation into why you are doing this and if you are joining only to come out with a degree in what you already do for a career???? Well???

Are you inquiring about the reserves?
For a reserve situation, do what you know, I know construction is slow right now, but it will turn again in a few year.... I know, I know.
Anyway, reserves is not going to be a reliable source of income unless you are planing on asking to be activated. Also in regards to advancement, you (in a way) make your own advancement, work hard, do what is asked, and go to all the schooling you can that they will pay for and your evaluations will be favorable and give you an edge along with passing the boards or tests required for making rate. Usually the number game does not come into a fact until much later in those making a "career" of it with active duty. Also with rate, look at undermanned positions, they will be far less competition, and you never know future Numbers when it comes to advancement as "who sticks around" makes a huge difference from year to year.

this day and age. id go with military police. guarantee u a job in the troopers , as long as u not crazy or a weirdo and can pass a pych test and convinvce people u can handle the job as a trooper/ County

don't join the military based on promotional chances. I recommend doing something that will push your mental and physical limits so that you have a greater respect and understanding for what the American flag really stands for.

I joined the Navy and just passed my screen test for SEAL and I can already tell you that if your soul purpose is to become an officer just to have a "higher ranking" than enlisted guys...then you are in for a rude awakening.

The military is an enlisted person's realm, "war is nothing but old men talking (officers), and young men dying (enlisted)".

my advice, really test your mental and physical limits, it might just change your life, at least in a better way than a few officer decorations from OCS would.
