Mauser is good but British SMLE was a better rivle and against the Mauser it will out gun it.

The SLR and Armalite, you can drop it from a plane and it won't break and you're raring to go.

Depends what environment you are in and what your target it is and distances involved.
Mp5 for building clearing.
C8 carbine for general use and urban.
L96 sniper rifle.
Barret .50 for anti vehicle.

Military rifle? Probably the M-14. Yes it is heavier than the M-16, but it shoots a heavier round, which can penetrate light armor, and is way more reliable in combat.

the H&K 416. It is a newer rifle that H&K developed with US special forces. It is similar to the M4/M16 design but has been dramatically improved. From the outside it looks simialr to an M-16 because the majority of the improvements are internal. The biggest complaint about the M-16 style rifle is that it is not the most dependable weapon, especially when compared to the AK-47 style. The 416 has rsolved most of the reliability issues, it has succesfully been used after being submersed in water, covered in sand, and even buried in mud.

The M1 garand. it was the best weapon of WWII and its fast (semi auto) and it was very accurate and effective

Assuming you are talking about military rifles, I will say the German Mauser 98. In production about a half a century, it was the most prolific rifle ever until the AK-47 came along. Chambered in multiple calibers, they are still readily available. They were produced not only by Germany, but nearly every country, including the U.S. In fact, the 1903 Springfield is so blatantly copied off the Mauser, they had to pay a copyright infringment fee for it.

Now, having said that, a bolt action is no match for an automatic rifle, but the shear length of service and number of countries who adopted the Mauser keep it at the top of the list. The M-16 is a fine weapon for war, but it needs cleaning. The AK is sturdy and needs little attention, but the sloppy construction that allows it to fire when fouled also lowers it's accuracy and lifespan. You can, with cleaning and maintenance, keep an M-16 firing for generations, but an AK has, at the most, a hundred thousand rounds in it before it starts crapping parts.

What about the L98 as the crappest one. They give it to Air Cadets to fire.

Its an SA80 converted to fire in single shot, meaning you have to pull the mechanisms back every shot, making it an SA80 that gets massively overworked aswell.

M-16A2. It has good range and reliability, can carry a grenade launcher, is light, and all around a good weapon.

M4 carbine. its a smaller version of the M16A2 and it is better. it has a great accuracy and you can typically find the ammunition (.223) almost anywhere. its a good caliber for tactical, target, and defense. now if you are talking about a sniper rifle, savage makes a nice .308 tactical model.

The AR series of rifles. The options you can add to this rifle and the different calibers you can rifle are outstanding. Eugene Stoner the creator of this rifle had no idea (in my opinion) how many configurations would be in demand. Now with the 416 model with its piston instead of gas tube the bolt and entire rifle is cleaner and cooler to operate.

M16 - it's got range, velocity and more accurate than an AK. recently they made a modified version of it that can shoot around corners. And if the U.S army uses it, it can't be that bad.
