Pancakes doesn't know what he is talking about, I went to Paris island...
You address them as their rank. So if they are a Gunnery Sgt, then you address them as that. Do not call them drill instructor, they have a rank, and call them that.
And if you are never sure of their rank, because you can not see the chevrons on their arm, always PROMOTE, never demote. Meaning, if you aren't sure between Corporal or Seargent, better to call him Sgt. and get yelled at then have him be insulted.
"Sir" and "Ma'am" are ONLY, and I mean ONLY for officers. NEVER EVER say sir or ma'am to an enlisted person. It ticks them off. Even being polite, it is always by rank if they are enlisted. |

Don't. Unless the DI adresses you. Then you address them by their rank. Usually Gunnery Sgt. |

In the Army, it was "YES, DRILL SERGEANT!!!!!!!!!!"
In the Marines, I think they address them as "Sir."
I do not know why. You try that with an Army Drill Sergeant and you will push the floor to Mexico. The response: "Don't you ever call me 'Sir.' You see these stripes?? I work for a living. You hit the dirt and give me 20, you scumbag!!! Don't you ever call me 'Sir.'"
Then they have you do a right face and you do 20 pushups for North, East, South, and West each. |

It depends on the drill instructor. Some like to be called sir, others like to be called by their rank and last name. My drill instructors preferred sir, but once I graduated, they instructed me to no longer address them by sir.
How the heck do I get a thumbs down when I am a Marine and know what the heck I am talking about? |

When I went to navy AOCS in Pensacola, we addressed our Marine Corps drill instructors (DIs) as:
Rank, LastName, United States Marine Corps
e.g.
Gunnery Sergeant Smith, United States Marine Corps. |

As a recruit they only allowed us to call them "sir" until we got to third phase, at which point they then decided that we rated to address them by rank. I.E. " " This recruit requests permission to speak to senior drill instructro Ssgt Bueno."
You'll notice that when you came back from up north they wore the same uniform we did and not the charlies because we as recruits finally earned the right to think of ourselves as Marines. |

bow to the ground with your face near the dirt. if you address him say somthing like "gloriouse one of enturnal bloodlines and gods" and when you stop talking end like "my you live forever" oo ya dont for get to let hime know (if you have any) that your kids would make good slaves for him. hope it helps!! |

If you're a recruit, you address them however they tell you to address them. (Don't worry, they'll come up with some reason to focus special attention on EVERY recruit... that's part of the process.)
If you're family and you're talking about family day and grad day, then ask your recruit to write about his DI team. He'll address them only by their rank and last name... "SSgt Hayes" And although the Marine DI's are used to civilians simply thanking them and not using ranks or names, they like it when we take the time to know how it's properly done. |

By their rank, Drill Sargent. |

By calling him or her 'drill sergeant'. If you say their name, you'll do at least 50 push ups. |
