What is the difference between the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force?

And who is the head of each?

Alecram
Commander in Chief is President Obama.

Navy's mission is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

Marine's Missions are "The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns;
the development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces; and such other duties as the President may direct." (10 U.S.C. § 5063 source 1)

Air Force's missions are
1. In general the United States Air Force shall include aviation forces both combat and service not otherwise assigned. It shall be organized, trained, and equipped primarily for prompt and sustained offensive and defensive air operations. The Air Force shall be responsible for the preparation of the air forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war except as otherwise assigned and, in accordance with integrated joint mobilization plans, for the expansion of the peacetime components of the Air Force to meet the needs of war. ( National Security Act of 1947, source 2)
2. to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States;
to support national policy;
to implement national objectives;
to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States. (§8062 of Title 10 US Code source 3)
3. The stated mission of the USAF today is to "fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace". (source 4)

The marines are the groundpounders of the navy, with less funding than any other branch. Therefore, their training reflects this. You mayve heard the expression 'We do more with less'

The navy...obvious, they use ships to get **** done. Now they can even fire a tomahawk missle from a submarine?!?! crazy. Most ships run on nuclear power nowadays

Army are groundpounders in general. There are so many jobs in the army youd be surprised. They are the goto for generally any situation, although each branch knows their own stuff.

The air force is just that, power over air. Flexibility, manuverability, they can shoot a missile through a car window anywhere in the world quicker than the blink of an eye...

Coast gaurd does more rescue over natural disasters within us terrain, but some fight as well.

Each branch has their own secretaries, as mentioned above, and the president is in command over all.

If you would like more information, I would recommend going to their respective websites.

Army will put a US flag in every city of the enemy country.
Navy will make the enemy country a hole in the ground.
Coast Guard will move the enemy country to kingdom come to keep them away from ours.
Air Force will make the enemy country a mushroom cloud.
Marines will make the enemy country indescribable on a map.

Each branch is supposed to serve a different function in securing the country's borders and interests, and maintaining those securities.

All military branches are overseen by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Joint Chiefs are overseen by Admiral Michael Mullen and General James E. Cartwright, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, respectively. They fall under jurisdiction of the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates who reports directly to the President, Barack Obama.

The Army is led by General George W. Casey, Jr., Chief of Staff of the United States Army. The purpose of the Army is to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States, support the national policies, implement the national objectives, and overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.

The Army is also responsible for land combat and service forces and such aviation and water transport as may be organic therein
being organized, trained, and equipped primarily for prompt and sustained combat incident to operations on land, the preparation of land forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war except as otherwise assigned, the expansion of the peacetime components of the Army to meet the needs of war.

The Navy is led by Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations. The Navy is responsible for the preparation of naval forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war, the maintenance of naval aviation, including land-based naval aviation, air transport essential for naval operations and all air weapons and air techniques involved in the operations and activities of the Navy, and the development of aircraft, weapons, tactics, technique, organization, and equipment of naval combat and service elements.

The Air Force is led by General Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. The Air Force is responsible to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States, to support national policy, to implement national objectives, to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.

The stated mission of the USAF today is to "fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace"

The Marine Corps is led by General James T. Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps is responsible for the seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns, the development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces and
such other duties as the President may direct.

What this means is that the Army is responsible for a broad area of security, whether it be land, air or sea. The Navy is responsible for defending the seas and providing transportation to the other branches across the seas. The Air Force is responsible for defending the airspace and technology of the military forces and providing air support to the other branches. The Marines are responsible for supporting the Navy's operations by use of amphibious landing or naval campaigns.

The name should say it all. The Army is for ground combat. The Navy is for sea combat. The Air Force is for aerial combat. The Coast Guard isn't even part of the Department of Defense but they're like a maritime law enforcement. And the Marines...well...they're pretty much following the Army and becoming more ground combat orientated than amphibious anymore....basically like having a second army.

ARMY AND MARINES ARE ON THE GROUND, BUT ARMY FLIES IN AND THE MARINES USE THE NAVY BY SHIP. MARINES ARE UNDER THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY. AIR FORCE IS EXACTLY THAT IN THE AIR, ALTHOUGH THE NAVY & MARINES HAVE THEIR OWN PILOTS AS WELL. AND THE COAST GUARD PROTECTS OUR WATERS, AS WELL AS NAVY TOO THOUGH.

SO YES SOME OF THEM INTERTWINE.
