My boyfriend is going to basic training in August. Then he leaves and goes down to Pensacola. Can someone please explain to me what's going to happen? What is A school? How often can he come home and how often can I visit? How is life aboard the ship? How often will I get to see him once he starts sailing out at sea? I really am confused about this whole process...someone help!

Unfortunately you will see very little of your boyfriend once he goes into the Navy. The fact that you two aren't married will make things even worse. Sorry |

As stated above unfortunately you are not married, which makes things a bit more difficult. "A" school is where he will go to learn the basics of his job(rating). He is allowed to use 30 days of leave(vacation)per year, which can accumulate if not needed to a total of 60 days if not on sea duty. If on sea duty and deployed within certain constraints the total can be increased. not every sailor goes to sea. There is shore duty but it can still be a heavy work schedule depending on the command he is attached to. Go to militaryonesouce.com or navy.mil and you can find out most of what you will need to know. While he is deployed there are spouses of the deployed personnel, usually of the Commanding Officer, Officers or Senior enlisted personnel who maintain contact and act as a liason for family and friends. When your bfriend is deployed ensure you get their email and phone numbers as they send updates for return from sea. |

First, I would like to applaud your boyfriend for deciding to serve our country. First of, boot camp usually about 8 week long, depending on how well he does and give a few days or so to allow a full class to be assembled. Class "A" school varies in length depending on the NEC- Navy Enlisted Classification code. My school was 6 months long. A sailor earns 30 days of leave a year. If he does not use a years worth leaving "A" school, he will probably be home on a holiday such a Xms or Thanksgiving or prior to deployment. Life aboard will take some getting used to. However, he should get the hang of it. |
