Total war is when a nation shifts all available resources to the war effort.
During the Civil War both the North and the South mobilized all materials available to them for the war. This included men and materials. The North however took it a step further with Gen. Sheridan's "Stripping of the Shenandoah Valley" and Sherman's "March to the Sea." In both cases the north took or destroyed everything they felt was vital to the south's war effort. |

Total War is a conflict of unlimited scope. Total War uses human, industrial, agricultural, military, natural, and technology to destroy or render beyond use their rival's capacity to continue resistance. You target everything in total war, there is no differentiation between combatants and non-combatants, you attack its industry, agriculture, military, natural resources, and even its technology or anything else that can help the opposing force. In Civil War, civilians were not targeted to be killed, but many unions soldiers burned their farms or anything that could keep the south in the war, and ram sacked their houses for any food or water. Sherman was one of the first military leaders to deliberately and consciously use total war as a military strategy. and total war was not used on the battlefield or at least during the battle. |
