Okinawa, My dad fought there in April and May, 1945. It changed his life to see his friends killed. He was shot on May 13,1945 and pronounced dead. He didn't die. He lived another 58 years. I read "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge about Okinawa. He was 18 years old. |

If you are a history buff you can have a favorite battle. My naval battle would have to be Midway, and tank battle would be Kursk. |

Rorke's Drift. Less than 200 British soldiers fought off 5000+ Zulus.
2nd up would be Battle of Ulundi. July 1879. After 3 Zulu charges, broken up by Gatling gun fire, the British 21st Lancers charged out of the British square and chased the surviing Zulus 2 miles. |

Jim and A B are good bets on this one. I don't believe I've ever heard one of our fighting men ever discussing a 'favorite battle' and of course I personally don't have one. But to be difficult or controversial here I would have to say that any battle an individual survived would be high on his own personal list of 'favorite battles'. War is hell and there ain't no doubt about it. I've always had a thought about the men on either side who didn't survive. What do you suppose their 'favorite battle' would be. Good luck to you. |

Midway, Chosen, Inchon, the Siege of Londonderry, Verdun, Bunker Hill, and King Jan's Sobieski's victory over the Muslims in Vienna. And all of the Pacific Island hopping battles.
All battles are important, because they are all inextricably based on every battle in humanity that every came before.
I'm interested in these simply because I have records of my ancestors being present at these battles, and I'm interested in genealogy as well as history these days.
Personally, I'm glad the Greeks won enough battles to create Western Civilization, or we simply would not be discussing any of this.
One fist-fight lost two thousand years ago, and all of our history and reality could have been erased. |

Ardennes Counter-offensive or 'The Battle of the Bulge' 16 December 1944 to 30 January 1945 proved to be the largest land battle to take place in Western Europe during WWII. While the German scope of the operation far exceeded their actual ability to succeed, they did manage to pose a credible threat to allied operations. They demonstrated to the American field commanders the future of modern warfare held in store and propelled George Smith Patton Jr. to his rightful place in U.S. military history seconded only by the historic defense of Bastogne by the members of the 101st Airborne Division. |

Strategically speaking the most interesting Battles would be the defeat of the Spanish armada 1588. The relatively small outgunned English using superior tactics and Strategy to defeat the better armed more experienced and larger Spanish Fleet. |

hey, that's a bad question man. You think men who fought in those battles world appreciate you picking your favorite battle? where they could have lost a brother or a best friend right in their arms? Just be glad there's men who stand ready to fight those battles, and don't worry about favorites. |

How about the one where two of Julius Caesar's legions (2000 men) fought a three-day battle that ended in a stalemate - with 3000 stark naked Celtic WOMEN!
He told his scribe, "Don't record this - I'll be the laughing stock of Rome." But SOMEBODY MUST have recorded it or we wouldn't know about it today. |
