What kind of house can I expect going into the Air Force? I will be a E-3 when my husband and 3 kids join me.?

Are you in the Air Force Now? As per the Regs, you are not even qualified to join the Air Force.

An E-3 is called an Airman 1st Class (A1C) Did you get a Dependency Waiver/Determination to join the Air Force?

As per AFRSI36-2001, the AF Recruiting Manual, in order for you to enter the AF with 2 or more underage dependents, you need a Dependency Determination/Waiver, enlisting in pay grades E1 - E-3. If you are eligible and enter as an E-4, then you would not require a Determination/Waiver.

Chances are you will not get On-Base housing for a few years. Most bases have waiting lists. You will most likely get a housing allowance to rent or buy a place off base.

If you want to know about the housing and specifics of on-base housing, find the web site for that base. There is usually a pretty good section telling you all about the housing situation.

If there is no availability on base, the base housing office will have listings of appropriate housing options for your family. These places will have been checked out and approved by the Air Force so you can be assured that they are ok places.

Chances are you would only get a 3 bedroom house on base. The military is not going to authorize every member in your family to have their separate rooms. Both girls will have to share.

Well just be warned that you might not get a 4 bedroom just because you have 3 kids. Your first two children are both girls and there is not a big age gap between them. I can't remember the difference that children must be to get their own room but since there is only 3 years between your older two, they might be "required" to share a room.

It all depends on where you are stationed at. Because each base has their own waiting list. And the waiting list go off of rank and how many rooms needed. It is a fact that lower enlisted usually have the longer waiting list than NCO's or Officers because NCO's and Officers make more money for BAH and can choose to live offpost more easier than lower enlisted.

But you can also choose to live off post and therefore know that you will get a 4 bedroom and exactly the type of house you want. Find out what base you will be going to and then call the housing up to see how long the wait list is and search their website to see about any realtors in that area to help with offpost housing. Also housing will probably have a list to help you to.

If you have a .mil account you can register a home email with AHRN - then you can search by base/rank/BAH for houses or apartments in your area. I'm pretty sure that you will not be given BAH for a house, you will be given BAH for an apartment/town house. "House" equivalent BAH doesn't start until the upper enlisted ranks and field grade for officers. Prior to that you are given "town house" or "apartment" equivalent BAH. Good news though, with the housing market down in most places, you can find some pretty good rentals. Good luck.

depending on location, availability and policy..a 3 or 4 BR unit. waiting lists can be over a year long to get into base housing.

Your best bet would be to get base housing... you will be put into a 4 bedroom house considering the size of your family. If you live off base, you will be given full BAQ and VHA, which would not get you as big a place.

Just be warned, 4 bedroom places on base don't get freed up that often, and a lot of apartment complexes or rentals you get aren't willing to break a lease for a move on base (If your commander orders it, that's something entirely different). Talk to your housing office immediately upon getting to your duty station.
