Mainly low middle class families to give them an opportunity to venture out of their neighborhood, have a better lifestyle, and serve their country. As far as poor families, some do join the military for some of the same purposes however they also join to go to college. As far as the age group, it's mainly under 25.

Brave patriots.

any the army isnt just all grunts theres postions you have to be very intelegent for 18-25 is when alot of people join lol you wealth has nothing to do with joining

You know you hate me
It is a broad demographics of race, incomes and regions. You are wrong about the rich part, my father (a Veteran himself) ended up earning about 200,000 a year at the time of my enlistment into the USMC. I know that is not rich to some people.

But I want to add in, I served with a lot of guys who came from families that could offer them anything plus a full ride to college......they enlisted. It is not always poor/lower income families. No matter where these people came from, they deserve respect for their service.

I think you would be surprised at the types of people who enlist in the military. You should do some research on the demographics at sources other than YA.

Americans of all walks of life join the military.

Hertha: the college people who join the military go on to very good careers, unlike many college people who go on to be drug addicts and liberals.

Rawbert
All kinds.
People who want to serve. Who are looking for a way out. Who are smart and then those who are not as smart... All income brackets

You'd be surprised. I served with a guy at Fort Benning. He invited us to go to his parent's place in Florida. Freaking mansion on Miami Beach. It looked like a set from Miami Vice! Guy's dad was a Cuban who had gotten off the island just after the Revolution and had gotten rich in the restaurant and hotel trade. All his sons had decided to serve because they knew how bad things could be.

You find all types of people in the Army. I was a hippie Deadhead with a sign on my section of the barracks room reading "Entering California: Think Mellow."

Mike
Anyone willing to serve their country, you dont need to be brave, they will build you up with courage, and strength. And any income families are allowed to enlist.

people who want to protect there country.want to learn a trade and go to school. want a steady pay check, need health insurance.

The army (as with all branches) has every type of demographic from the ultra poor trying to make something of themselves to the ultra rich looking for that something they just can't buy.

Pat Tillman is a good example of someone who had the world at his fingertips but decided he wanted to serve.

The average age has increased and will continue to do so. I spoke to a guy the other day who's carpentry business was hurting, so he joined the army. (he was 41)

I was a Marine recruiter in detroit for three years and I put in a guy from grosse point who was a lawyer making over 250k a year but wanted some travel and adventure.

Best answer to your question is that people from all walks of life join and many for reasons that can't be explained

Hertha
Right, people from poor families. Some middle-income families. There are weird ones who go to college and then enlist as an officer. They do have a lot of military academy mental cases who like the army.
