Depending on who. what I mean is if you're asking what lesson has bush and other rich political republican figures have learnt from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, is to pay what you owe, and that these thirsty other nations mean business. On the other hand those brave military personell who joined for pride , and for those others who joined the military for a scholarship and a career promises. Their lesson must have been ( Why did I make this sacrifice for a bunch of political Billionaires in debt).

the problem is not what we will learn from these two military jaunts.
the problem is that we have failed to learn from history. we will get our arses kicked in both these countries no matter how good our forces are.
the main reason we are still there is because our leaders don't know how to get us out without losing face. they forgot to have an exit plan.
our enemies in both these countries cant believe their luck.we think in years , they think in decades.time is on their side.
don't laugh too much at the Russians.its coming to us as well.
a good bet for an investment is a maker of body bags.

We "learned" that we have shaky allies and that we are long past due for a rethink on our alliances with other nations.

- Prepare for American Isolationism. Lets see how you people do with the "American safety valve".

Is It in the constitution?

That if we fight them there, we'll keep them busy enough not to get civilians attacked is US soil.

Suport our troops, OR bring them home... It's one or the other... don't try to mix them... It doen't work that way.

Same one as the British didn't learn in their two atempts, the russians in their one and before them the Medes&Persians, Alexander the Great and every other fool who's tried to subdue that area, namely that you can conquer it easily enough but keeping it conquered for more than a few weeks gets blxxdy expensive in terms of lost manpower. As Springstein once sang 'I had a brother at Saigo fighting of the Viet cong, they're still there but he's long gone. Same thing'll happen in Iraq/Afghanistan, might take em a few years btu theyre kinda used to that!

We have been bombing the middle east for ten years at least.
They have bombing themselves longer. We should not be involved, period.
American troops defend best on American borders.
Bush will fail, for Americans, this is a good thing. 70% of Americans reject what Bush has done. We have become a dictatorship, things have gotten out of hand. If it continues like it is now, a lot of comfortable rich people will be taking a piss in the streets next to our troops, and they won't have some wipes for their dribble, poor things. On second thought, let the fools carry on?...........

Since its actually a two-part question,it deserves a two-part answer. In Afganistan we learned that Russia really is weak.It took us weeks what they couldnt do in 7 years. In Iran we learned that you can't civalize uncilvilaized people.Let them kill each other.Look no futher then the Gaza strip with Hamas killing Fatah. In closing support our brave men and women they are worthy of our respect.

Some correspondents knowledge of the world is tiny at least outside the US. To call Iraq/Iran uncivilised displays the ignorance of someone who has never been to either country nor has a knowledge of history. Iraq/Iran(Persia) were great civilisations when North Americans and most Europeans were still in the forests. To answer the question I think most American people are beginning to see that the situation is basically untenable at least in Iraq. As for Afghanistan, well the Afghan people have eventually driven out every country that has tried to oppress them.

At the lower tactical levels, they've learnt and disseminated a whole host of tactical lessons learnt; far too many to list here. However, I'm assuming your question is pitched at the higher, national/strategic level? If this is the case, then I'd say the US have learnt the following lessons:

1. Regime change can be achieved relatively rapidly once the political decision has been taken to deploy the required military capability. However, post-conflict operations are more complicated, can take a lot more time, effort and money than anticipated. Planning for the post-conflict stage therefore needs to be carried out as early as posssible, preferably in tandem with the military planning.

2. Although military victory in a conventional campaign can be rapidly achieved by the application of superior forces, technology and methods, the requirement for 'boots on the ground' remains as large as ever. Particularly in Afghanistan, but also in Iraq, an unstable operational environment drives the requirement for a continuous visible presence through patrolling, raids, etc. The US Regular forces are stretched, and the enduring operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have led to the wider use of Reserve Forces (National Guard) and the need for other nations to contribute forces. In the political arena, there is a continuing need to get other countries 'on side' and willing to participate in the post-conflict Peace Support Operations.

3. Security Sector Reform (SSR) is a key factor in enabling a country to make the transition from a defeated territory occupied by its opponents, into a successful state. SSR involves the creation and maintenance of national Armed Forces, Police etc, to enable the new regime to maintain the rule of law domestically and to defend their territorial integrity from outside attack.

4. Expert media handling skills are required for the presentation of 'the message' about the reasons for a conflict, its conduct, and the conditions in which operations are carried out. The Main Stream Media (MSM) now includes electronic sources, which can bring both potential benefits and dangers to any Government, particularly where the speed of media reaction to major events is concerned.

An exhaustive list of all the lessons the US has drawn from these conflicts would take forever. However, I think it would be naive to say the US have learnt not to go into large, complex and often hostile countries. If perceived or actual US interests are at stake, they will do whatever it takes. The fact that they're still in both Iraq and Afghanistan (albeit cooperating with Coalition forces), demonstrates that.

It should be that bombing people until they agree with you doesn't work.

Then Bush starts talking about Iran and it shows that Americans learn nothing.

Its shocking to see how many Americans take no responsibility for their actions in Iraq and Gaza. In Iraq, they bombed a country leaving no infrastructure, no electricity or water for months and no security and they wonder why fighting has broken out? If you call Iraqis uncivilised, then look at the Americans New Orleans and what happened there in the aftermath. When you create a desperate situation, people react differently.

As for Gaza, America promotes democracy. Then, as soon as Hamas are democratically voted in, America cuts all aid and agin create a pressured environment for people with no hope.

America bomb peoploe in Shock & Awe and kills hundreds of thousands of innocent men women and childred. Iraqis set off small bombs killing a handful fighting for what they believe and its uncivilised. Bombs are bombs, and they are as bad as each other.

Never trust a liberal to see a war through until it's finish. they'd rather cut and run like cowards.

i believe they have learnt both good and bad lessons first good that they have removed horrific regimes who plagued their people of freedom bad because they have lost so many good brave men in the fight but every soldier knows what he signed up for so they just get on the best way they know how.

Afghanistan I lookk at as a humanitarian effort and to subdue Al queerda.I think the lessons we will al ways learn,is we back the wrogpeople, take Croatia we saved there reaers from the serbs and now thehaebor more al queida groops than afghanistan, not the best of choices to make americans not see monica. In Iraq we have no costitutional right to be there, many parts of the constitution were violated as the bill of writes. In order for us to go to war we must be attacked first, not by suspicion, but by sinkink the Lutianita. WE are in I raq for only one reason.to get former soviet countries ti pipe through Turkey, instead of Iraq.Last week yhe president said we are giong to keep a base in Iraq. Why becaused they love us so much?NO we want oil, thats it,bush has killed 175000 more people than Hussien. Call me a treasonist. I truly believe george w (who I did vote for) must be tried by the Un for crimes against humanity...I support the troops, but they stopped supporting the efforts, three platoon leaders are now being courtmarstiald for not taking out troopps to be killed or kill Iraqian civillians. But if you really want to be frieghtened look at china and central america.
