What major should a Navy SEAL take in college?
|
What would be the best major and minor that a future Navy SEAL Lt. take at the Naval Academy? And if he went to a regular college where they offer everything, what should he take? Foreign languges not included...
Thank you

Mechanical or civil engineering would be top on the list.
Plus courses in history, psychology, and sociology.
The underlying reason for each is the same. As a SEAL, you have to be able to analyze and deal with complex situations and come up with solutions to problems -- and those areas teach you how. Engineering deals with the physical world. History and the social sciences deal with the human element. |

One doesn't get into the Seals with just brains, it's strength, a strong will, and determination. Once you have been chosen (a slim chance) you will be taught everything you need to know. |

The Mr. Wise guy who answered should just jump off a cliff.
I am on the Army side but do the same sort of work as he is pondering in the Navy. It is a way of being able to think critically. So most any major will do.
A big way to go would be history as that leads you to be able to understand cultures. A healthy dose of international relations, politics and all of that is good. But the point is history means all.
As an aside he needs to work on stamina. Not lifting weights all of the time. The huge guys are the first to wash out. |

Its all what you want to do, post-Navy. Some SEALs I know, only do a tour or two. You have some lifers that are in for the long haul. Nobody can determine your future (education or not), except fory ou. Good luck. |

It used to be that any major would do make you eligible for an officer program. I'd suppose that any Annapolis major would suffice. As for a major that might help you as a Special Warfare Officer, any major that trains you to think and resolve problems objectively, logically, and dispassionately while avoiding the politics and other bull stuff would be advisable. That would preclude any of the social so-called "sciences" (sociology, psychology, political science.
Caveat: Annapolis is only a vehicle to a uniform. It doesn't make you SEAL... and it certainly doesn't make you a good officer. I think that Annapolis and OCS -- or any kind of leadership/management training -- it's kind of like going to an island. If you don't have what it takes to be an officer/leader/manager going in, you won't find it there.
I was Navy for 25 years. I enlisted with a BA in Math. When it came time for me to reenlist for my E-6, somebody dusted off my degree and recommended me for OCS. I like to think it was because of my exceptional leadership skills, my ability to think outside of the box, and my awesome personality and my humility tempered by my honesty. However it was probably that they had a new program starting up and wanted young officers with my training involved. |

Most seals have no college.
If you want to succeed in the Navy as an officer, then Physics, Engineering, Math, Quantum Mechanics, Law, or Accounting. |

Anything that requires a reasonable degree of effort and intelligence to graduate from (i.e. NOT philosophy or media studies...)
Try political science with an emphasis on middle east politics, history, or both (double major or major/minor.) Engineering is not bad either, considering that the skills you learn in a program like that will very likely come into play if and when you become a SEAL.
With them, it's not about having a degree (which isn't a requirement) but having the mental and physical determination to make it. |

It takes a good amount of intellect to major in Philosophy. Many of today's intelligentsia majored in Philosophy. Metaphysics at an advance level will stretch even the most capable minds. And no, I am not a Philosophy major, nevertheless I felt the need to make the correction, by the way I am majoring in History/Government. Anything that will exercise the mind is beneficial. Everyone has their own special abilities and with need people with different perspectives in our military. |
