What prevents our military from using force to overcome democracy and setting up a dictatorship?

Each state has a National Guard,Air National Guard, whose 1st boss is the Governor, and 50 Governors won't/can't allow this to happen!! And in the event of a possible coup, theirs a million&1/2 ole vets would bear their arms!!! I'll never support gun control, as this may be our last defense!! And for those who indorce/believe that we live in a dictatorship now, just pack up your crap and go back to where you came FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Belief. That's right, I said belief. It is the simple belief in the things our Constitution and Bill of Rights stands for. The men and women of our totally voluntary military believe in the ideals stated in these documents. They believe, as do most U.S. citizens, that those ideals are what have made our country great. And so they have taken an oath to uphold those ideals even unto death.
If a General decided to pull off a coup he might have a small core of soldiers support him but the vast majority would consider it an unlawfull order and refuse to participate. Even act to stop it.

Easy answer, it would be an unlawful act. I took an Oath to uphold the Constitution and will not betray that Oath. I served the C-I-C and if need be would protect whoever that might be with my life.

you didn't listen very well in school did you? or could it be that it is not being taught in school anymore? read the constitution and understand what it is saying. don't read it and understand what you want it to say like a a lot of liberals do.

the could not do that, legally, as bush controls unquestionably where the troops are mobilized and their actions. this scenario is illegal for the military to execute and would be discounted without anything happening to bush.

They could, haven't and most likely won't. The army is currently overextended throughout the world. If the military was to take over the government, it'd still have to deal with over 300 million citizens who would not take well to a coup. Also, the military most likely knows a stable government is best for the USA currently and forever, as can be seen from Burma and Pakistan, both failed militarily led countries.

/WHAT BUSH has done with the U.S. can only be considered as a dictatorship here.
Hes exploited every loophole, played every political hand,to create a dictatorship from within a democracy.

checks and balances is very very hard when you have half the government in support of this dictatorship, essentially stonewalling the otherside of congress from truly offering checks and balances.

The Republican party is just as guilty as bush is for allowing this terrible, ruthless evil group weaken our nation

America already has a Dictatorship!! And those checks and balances that you believe are there to keep the military from taking over do not exist.. The military and gets more money than any other institution in America.. and that will never change. Now just because they are not running around in the streets and policing you does not mean they are not in charge..

As long as Ameicans's keep supporting blindly, the Military then the Military has no reason to put tanks in the streets.. It has already all the power
