What to expect from the Army?

im 17 years old, and for the past months ive been seriously considering joining the army, or marines. i was just wondering if anyone had advice on what to expect, like if i join the army will i most likely go to iraq or afganisthan? and in the army i want to do something with infantry, but what would you suggest for that, ranger school? or some other special ops program? and im leaning more towards the army than the Marines, but im still not sure... i just need some advice, and i know i should talk to a recruiter, but they haven't gotten back to me yet. and any other advice or tips you can give me about the Army or Marines would be great... . thanks for the help

check out goarmy.com and marines.com and see what they have to offer. in either one though, if there is war going on then your are most likley going to get deployed. by the way you can sign up at the age of 17 with parental consent. just do your research before you sign anything though

talk to people who are in the military now and see what branch is the best. Don't talk to recuiters. talk to real military people who had been thought basic and the war.

Fort Benning "Home of the Infantry" OSUT has a 15% WASH-OUT rate. Infantryman are trained to much higher standards.

Some Infantrymen I know were in Red Phase their entire 16 weeks, even though the "colors" changed, the tempo was still no different from red phase, i.e. they busted their butts from day 1 to the day they earned their Blue Cords) I advise you look up what red phase actually entails. i.e. Drill Sergeants have a lot to do with how the speed works,

"BCT" is thrown across the entire OSUT, Infantry are trained in "Advanced" Soldiering Skills, not Basic, but advanced, they go more "into depth" with things than the other BCTs. (Hence why there isn't any "graduation" until the Turning Blue Ceremony)

When they went into a training topic, they covered the Basics in it, and than went on to the Infantry Advance components of it. Like Weapons Training, they took it further than just qualifications, (a LOT further) etc. When they go and cover NBC (CBRN now) training, they set you out in combat training (full combat training with the lasers and everything) in NBC gear, from creating concealed positions to mounting full flung assaults... all in all, from day 0 to the very last day, there wasn't any break between "BCT" and "AIT" because they taught the skills interchangibly, mixed, etc. throughout the entire thing...

Unless an Infantryman (who's gone through OSUT a VERY recently) says otherwise, don't count on anything being the same as Infantry... As I said prior, they are trained, and taught Advanced Soldiering Skills, they cover basics, than cover the advanced forms of what they learned... It's what makes them Infantry vs basic Soldiers.

DEFINATLEY GO RANGERS! and DEFINATLEY DONT ask a recruiter what warfare is like hes required to paint a freakin rainbow for you so you will join. basically what i would do is go up to someone who has been in Iraq Ect and ask them what they disliked the most if you can live with their extreme dislikes of the job and the good outweighs the bad you should sign the contract but make sure you ask for the GI Bill with any kickers they got, any sign up bonuses, and make sure you get the VA grants, because as much fun as it is to shoot **** up and blow the **** out of things you might want to hit college latter and why not get it for free.
