Goodness, it's Monday morning and who gives a rats a*s, serving in a war or combat zone is not a prerequisite for being commander and chief. |

He served during the Vietnam War Era in the TX National Guard. That is more than many Americans have done and are doing... |

If you already know the answer, then why are you asking? There were a lot of people who served during the Vietnam War. Many never went to Vietnam----heck many never left the U.S. Many serve in National Gaurd units and Reserve units and only went to meeting one weekend a month and 2 weeks summer camp. Did they not serve during Vietnam? |

BW is currently serving in the Global War on Terrorism. He is the Commander In Chief of the Armed forces.
If you want to get technical, he signed up and served in the National Guard. Bill Clinton however fled to England and renounced his US citizenship to avoid serving the country. He must just have been better than all the other brave men and women who were called upon by the country to fight for freedom. |

President Bush was a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. In case you have not noticed, people in the National Guard can be sent in to action overseas if they are required. He not only showed up but over attended most of his training for the majority of his time. Near the end of his hitch, the plane he was trained to fly was obsoleted and his time was too short to make re-training him in the new planes worthwhile.
That and his accumulation of so many points earlier in his Air National Guard trainning allowed him to be excused from some sessions and still meet his commitment. This was not an unusual occurance in the National Guard.
What is more, the media knows this yet it is in their personal interest to mislead the public about it. Funny, but even if President Bush only served one day in the military it was one day more than Bill Clinton (who illegally dogged the draft and did not serve at all) yet that hardly raised an eyebrow among the news media.
Why do you suppose that is?

Dubya was in the national guard, but had a hard time showing up for drills. He was on active reserve during the VN era but never served in combat or a support role. I think he was bunking with Dan Quayle. Neither one of them can spell. |

The only war he fought was the one between desire and better judgment
The desire to get drunk and high on cocaine.
and
The better judgment not to do so.
The desire to stay in bed with a hangover and not report for duty in the Air National Guard
and
the better judgment to report for duty. |

He didn't. Neither did any of his goverment, with the exception of Colin Powell. Whatever happened to the days where our leaders led the charge into battle? I guarantee there would be less war if our President had to be on the front lines. |

He was rich and connected, and I think almost anyone with a brain did what they could and worked the system to get out of that if they could. People like John Kerry who could have easily gotten out of serving, but volunteered to go are a much rarer breed (Pat Tilman is a hero for it, and was against the Iraq war; John Kerry volunteered and went and then, with the moral authority of having served, spoke out against Viet Nam, as was his right, and he's demonized and smeared with lies by the small-minded for it),
I don't begrudge Bush that. I do have a problem with his feckless war-mongering now, his disregard for the lives of those who volunteer to serve, as I do all the neo-con chicken hawks who think war is fine now, don't treat it like an ugly last resort, question the patriotism of anyone who thinks we should be more reluctant to resort to war, but couldn't be bothered themselves.
The only war Bush served in was one against sobriety. He even couldn't be bothered to fulfill his commitment in his champagne unit. He got in ahead of many others ahead of him in line. He made sure he was assigned to fly planes that were not used in the conflict, but, by coincidence, when they started drug testing, he missed his physicals, stopped flying, and then never even showed up.
Was he honorably discharged? Yes. Was he AWOL? Yes. Was he "gifted" with the points he was short, without the required service to earn them? Yes. |
