What was the first war the USA ever lost?

The war in Korea. Today 50 years later Korea is still a country divided and the Communist North is the largest threat to nuclear war in the world today.
The war in Vietnam. Before the war only North Vietnam was Communist. Today 40 years later all of Vietnam is under Communist rule.
(For those that say these were not wars but only police actions, tell that to the tens of thousands of troops that died there)
Although you didn't ask the next war the USA will lose is the war in Iraq.

It is not as simple as having winners or losers in war. War is just for losers.

Depends how you define "lost" as well. The USA attempted to invade Canada during the War of 1812, and were repelled. So they failed, but they didn't really "lose" per se.

Arguably the war of 1812.

The US invaded 'upper Canada' really a British colony at the time. The intention was to annex what is now Southern Ontario to the US, by use of force.

In the end, the Territorial lines were changed a bit, but there was no net gain.

Most American history accounts consider this more of a tie... nothing lost, nothing gained. Some consider it a US win... I'm not really certain how.

Most European and Canadian accounts consider it ultimately as a peaceful settlement. But many consider it a British win, since they were attacked, and defended their territory against invaders.

By the same kind of reasoning, I'd say that if you consider the war of 1812 a win or a tie, because they didn't loose territory, then the US has never lost a war.

On the other hand the reasoning, that an invasion that does not succeed, is a loss, then the US has lost a few... Vietnam, Korea for example

The War of 1812. Of course the CSA lost the Civil War. One could say the United States redeemed itself after 1812, but the initial war was an abysmal failure and totally needless, too.

It is unfair to say Vietnam was not a success because the North did not invade until AFTER U.S. forces had left, thus there was no rout. We have pulled out of other conflicts, too.

Vietnam. "Conflict" "Police Action"......war is war, whatever you call it and we lost. If "Seinfeld" and "Will and Grace" can get out why they're still ahead, why can't we?

Vietnam was a "Conflict" and we withdrew from the conflict.

Arguably the USA "lost" the Civil War.

Some would say Vietnam...although many would disagree.

Many military conflicts, even ones of extended duration, are not officially "wars."
