The Tonkin Gulf Resolution gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of conventional military force in Southeast Asia. This essentially meant that he could deploy as many troops as he wanted, as often as he wanted (or advised) in order to prevent the spread of communism. This is the significance in the escalation of the war in Viet Nam.
