With the hindsight of 6 years, I now realize that I didn't understand the consequences of that day, at the time.
I don't think anyone did.
I was in Las Vegas that morning. There were NO people in the casinos. They were all in their rooms watching the events in New York.
The big hotels in Las Vegas began laying people off at noon, because they knew what the event would mean for their businesses. No new guests for a while.
I was trapped in Las Vegas like everyone else because no airplanes were allowed to fly (later I found out that one airplane was allowed to take off and leave the US. It carried members of the Saudi royal family back to the middle east).
A few months later I had some business on the east coast and landed at Newark Airport which usually affords a good view of the NY Skyline.
The business associate I was meeting asked what I thought about the NY skyline with the towers gone. I was surprised at my own reaction. I was not so much sad as I was furious.
Today, six years later when I see footage of that event, of people jumping out of windows on the 103rd floor because that would be an easier death than burning, of five stories of rubble where the towers were, of police and firemen covered in soot and dirt and sweat and blood, of the look of despair and bewilderment on the faces who were there, I still can't believe it.
America lost a good deal of its innocence the day John Kennedy was assassinated. We lost the rest of it on September 11, 2001. |

(First Thought)
OH CRAP!
Of course you know THIS MEANS WAR!
(Second Thought)
You know, those buildings came down awfully beautifully. Hmmm... Something is not quite right.
(My thoughts Four Years Later)
I didn't find out WTC7 imploded on 9/11 until 4.5 years later. Then my thoughts were, Why didn't I hear about this on national TV ? Who has the power to control national TV ? I smell some big rats, could they be BUSH, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz? |

well as your 1st thought was obviously not a very bright one, my first thought was after getting home from a long day teaching was the look of horror on my sons face as he came running down the stairs shouting for me to turn to the news.....we stood, we sat we watched..............no bear in mind this was unfolding before our eyes as we watched our friends and allies get hit in ways that I thought only the UK got hit, by terrorists...........
I turned to my then bf and said OMG your family where are they, call and check..........I then called my family and got them to check on cousins in the USA one a pilot and one an air hostess ...............both should have been on different planes, both of which went down BUT both of them got switched at the last moment............
MY thoughts then turned to ALL the American children that I taught at the school who's parents are military and wondered just where this was going to leave them............

I was stationed in Germany at the time. My first thought was "Is this real or just another 'reality news/drama show?'
The next thought was "damn, I'm going to be pulling guard duty all night."
I was right, too... |

I honestly had no clue what was going on, and therefore had few thoughts on the matter going through my mind. I was mostly wondering what a twin tower was and why my mother wouldn't allow me to watch television.
All cleared up now. The mourning of the tragedy came with my eventual maturity.
Oh yeah, and my grandmother telling me that this would be a monumental day in my life. |

First thought: "This is a joke, right?"
Second thought: "Holy smokes, what has this world come to?"
I was 19, in my first college class of the morning, when someone burst in yelling "NY is under attack!" Everyone flooded to the nearest television to see what was going on. Classes were cancelled for the next 2 days. |

When we got up that morning and saw the pictures on the news, my first thought was that it was some sort of War of the Worlds stunt, like the radio show. |

Wow, political bigotry even way back then!
Unimpressed.
I thought about the people dying.
I thought about how my family escaped Islam in the 1950s.
I thought, here it comes, we've been expecting this war for decades.
I thought, President Bush, you better be a darn strong President, because these people want to convert, enslave, or kill (I knew it was Islam, even then).
Right now I'm thinking you have no idea of what you are talking about. |

My first thought was that this was going to be an
excuse
for the loser son of the loser Bush sr.
to go to war with Iraq, even though there was no proof against Iraq having anything to do with it.
My friends now think I am psychic. |

Well, no offense or anything--I was only 9 at the time-, but I thought that immigrants did it because they couldn't get into the country. I didn't really know too much about it... I was too young to know exactly what was happening. |
