Proud to be an AMERICAN

It would have been divided and much weaker, and slavery would still have existed for a while.
Maybe the two sides would have eventually come together, maybe not. If not, then perhaps the whole nation would have withered and died.
Also, the nation changed due to the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments - rather than the Constitution protecting the people and the states from the federal government, it was seen as protecting the people (rightly or wrongly) from the actions of the states. The victory of the North in the Civil War greatly strengthened the federal government, for better or for worse. |

We would be divided, but the states would have more states rights. Slavery would have been gone, since it was going out anyway and it was only a side issue of the war. We may have come back together, but the states would be more adamant about their individuality....as it should be. |

the South was only fighting to stay seperate so there would be 2 countries now, maybe 3 (who knows if the West esp California would have stayed with the North if the Union had lost
Slavery would have continued for a few more decades anyways
who knows if the North and South would have rejoined
WWI and WWII may have gone differently without the USA to stop the Germans in Europe
World would be a different place and probably not a good one |

Read Harry Turtledove's "Guns of the South" and find out.... |

Gotta have more explosions!

Slavery in North America would have lasted longer, but probably have inevitably died out. Did you know towards the end, the South was offering slave families freedom in exchange for military service?
Overall, probably just a different political atmosphere. Business would have carried on as usual for both the North and South parts of a presumedly unified America, just with less emphasis on federalism. |

It would still be trying to catch up with civil rights and stuck in a time warp, although southern manners are really nice and polite but the rest is all antiquated |

Basically, the North American continent would've been in a perpetual state of conflict, much like Europe has been for centuries.
The dissention would've continued, with perhaps 3 or 4 separate nations instead of one. Imagine how ripe this arrangement would've been for invasion from European threats!
The grand experiment that is the US would've failed, and the entire world would've suffered for it. |

Lol at the people saying the union soldiers died to free the slaves. It is just so hilarious that you think that. They died to defeat the "rebels" and make the "union" whole again. The emancipation proclamation was just a way to spread dissent in the South. Possibly to secure the help of the inevitable rogue slave groups. |
