It depends on the person. Every person will have a different opinion about what is 'cool.' For example waffles loves being a cook so for her that is the coolest job in the military.

I loved being a tank crewman and there were a number of people who thought I was crazy.

lol, i'm food services in the Army...
for those of you that need that "dumbed down"
i'm a freaking cook. But I love what I do.....

You don't join the forces to be cool. The civvies may find it cool but you join to have a sense of responsibility

It all depends on what you like to do. Personally I think if I went in I would should for intelligence. But fun? I don't know about that. You sit inside reading maps and intell reports, then you send young men off on dangerous missions because your best guess is that the enemy is there.

Other then that I'd go Military Police. I enjoy that kind of work. But fun? Having all the guys dislike you the same as people dont like cops in the civy world. And having to do all this paperwork for everything you do? Blah.

So what I'm saying is thats what I'd enjoy most isnt nessisarily "fun". To be honest, I dont see any job in the military as being "fun". You need to think more as what you would most enjoy. If all you want is fun, join the girl scouts instead.

As a warning; all the people in here going ooo special forces is so fun, being a SEAL or a Ranger or whatever, don't listen. The only reason they think that is because Delta Force XII for PS2 is a rightious game dude. I think maybe one of them has actually been there.
Not saying it's not fun. Once again it depends what you're into. My idea of fun doesnt include jumping out of airplanes. But I know for some people they'd rather do that then anything. One final warning; even if SF is fun, getting there sure as heck isnt easy.

My post in a nutshell; screw fun. What do you personally ENJOY doing?

Whatever duty you choose is the "coolest" and the most important. What is a pilot without an aircraft mechanic? Infantry. Every job is the most important. But I was most thankful for Accounting and Finance, and Food Services. I liked to get paid, and I got hungry. But, you don't enlist to be cool, you enlist to serve your country. That is called a selfless act, and that is cool.

A refrigeration engineer!

I've no idea what you are refering to in the use of the word 'cool.'

I think you might have to a little bit more of 'the learning' before you are ripe for the job.

When I joined the Army in 1984, I scored high enough on the ASVAB to pretty much pick any MOS the Army offered (which didn't require a college degree), so I asked, what pays the highest Critical Skill bonus?

98G, which I think I read had been changed to 35L, Cryptological Warfare, Signal Intelligence, Voice Interceptor, Russian- this is Military Intelligence (at that time, anyway). After Basic training, I was assigned to the Defense Language Institute, in Monterey CA, to attend a year long course in Basic Russian.

5 Days a week, 6 hours a day, for 47 weeks we read, spoke listened to Russian with real Russian persons/instructors (one of whom went on to have a fairly good career in movies- co-starring with Robin Williams in "Moscow on the Hudson", etc). After a while, if you are training correctly you wll begin dreaming in the language you're learning.

If you pass the language course (these days, they're probably pushing Farsi much more than Russian or Chinese), then it's on to another MOS training station to learn how to do the classified part of the job.

A background investigation WILL be performed in preparation to giving you a Top Secret Security Clearance to perform this MOS. You will be "vetted" (interviewed) by two Special Agents of the FBI. They will also talk to friends, family members, teachers, etc to determine whether you have ever robbed a bank or had "terrorist" sympathies.

I suggest, if you go this route, tell the SAs EVERYTHING. They will pretty much find it out anyway, and it doesn't look like youre trying to hide anything.

The classified part of the job is very tough, and the washout (flunk) rate is VERY high. We started out with 140 students from 6 different services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserves) and we graduated 38 at the end of about 18 months of training (out of a 48 month military obligation).

Once out of training, you receive your bonus and your orders. I spent 2 years in Wurzburg, Bavaria, in a Tactical MI unit, meaning we lived in tents a LOT of the time in the field. The other side of this is a Strategic post, where there is no field work, it's more like an office job, but with armed guards making sure no one removes any classified material.

I had two t shirts made up in Germany. One said, "103rd MI BN - We're Cunning Linguists" the other "We Learn Russian So you Don't Have To".

i would say that you have no concept of the army,if you want cool then be a lifeguard on the beach, every person serving the flag of their country is as good as the next man/woman,i dont care if your the roughest toughest marine in the USMC or the best of the best in the SAS,either one would be useless without support from cooks, drivers, store men, medics and office staff therefor cool it ain't!!!!
