What would you say to a service member who burned himself several times with a cigarette to get a purple heart?

Purple heart is only given out to individuals injured in the line of duty. Also, fellow servicemen tend to claim it is "Bad Luck" to get a purple heart for something small. Unless he went AWOL, and claimed to have been tortured, it wouldn't work at all. If he went AWOL, and claimed to have been tortured, they would likely demand more proof.

The other alternatives include burning himself during a battle, and trying to pass them off as bullet wounds, or from falling sparks. Most medics and soldiers could tell the difference, and anyone who saw him doing it would likely make sure he got wounded "in the line of duty" later on so no bad luck befell their group. Wounding oneself is known as malingering, and is punishable.

i would tell him that he is disgracing those who actually were unfortunate enough to have to earn the purple heart and serve our country in that fashion.

injury in battle should never be ridiculed in such a manner. a purple heart isn't something that should be sought after, but something that is bestowed upon brave men and women who answer the call of duty in the most trying of times.

I know you want to come home with with a medal for bravery,but you don't need a medal to prove that what you did was brave.Just you being there takes a lot of courage,and makes you brave in my book.
