The Iraq war start in 1990. Actually the precursor to the war was Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990,which brought about Operation Desert Shield August 2,1990 to January 17, 1991 the actual war, Operation Desert Storm, started Jan 17, 1991 a cease fire was negotiated March 1, 1991, since there was no peace treaty, only a cease fire the Iraq war never officially ended. Operation Southern Watch was part of the cease fire, which Saddam Hussein violated many times by firing anti-aircraft missiles at U.S. and allied aircraft. Operation Iraqi Freedom started March 19, 2003 when congress and UN authorized the use of military force to remove Saddam Hussein as a threat to the area. Click on the Chronology for both operations Southern watch and Northern watch too see violations of UN Mandates. Look at all the operations that have occured in Iraq, most of them in answer to Saddam Hussein's violation of UN mandates.

The U.S. invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq in March 2003, ended "major military operations" in May 2003. Considering the fact that we deposed them of their leader, took over all forms of their government, disbanded their police, etc -- it was over in May '03 when Bush said it was.

It's been an occupation ever since.

Which conflict? 1991 for Gulf War, 2003 for Iraqi Freedom.

The current Iraq conflict started in March 2003, originally supposed to be in February. We were on standby to invade Iraq in Feb until President Bush gave Saddam an extra month to comply, an extra month. We were already in country when the Iraqi Freedom was first commenced aboard ship waiting for the word.
