Do you really think Scotland would have any real Defence force under Salmond.
Under SNP plans Scotland would leave NATO and become the Socialist Republic of Scotland. I doubt Scotland will even have much of a credible Defence Force beyond a couple of fishery protection vessels and a couple of rescue helicopters.
The English MoD would also pull on Defence Research done at Scottish Universities and move it's infrastructure and jobs back to England, including the Clydeside Naval Base Scotland's largest employer.
According to the Journal of Defence Analysis two of Scotlands three RAF bases would also have to close if Scotland became Independent.
An Independent Scottish Army would be mainly a poorly equipped home defence force.
Even many Irish recruits are now joining the British Army rather than their own Irish Defence Force.

An Independent England would possible look to the French, who the UK is already building close defence ties too, with a possible sharing of new aircraft carriers and a joint Franco-English Nuclear Deterrent. Indeed we have even toyed with the idea of a Franco-British Union in the not to distant past.

An independent Socialist Scotland would no doubt please George Galloway and other Scottish Socialist such as Tommy Sheridan who would love to be given the chance to take the Scottish economy down to the levels of Zimbabwe.
You could also have Scotsman Brown back, Bair (who was born in Scotland and Educated in Edinburgh) back, Speaker Gorbals Mick back, Scottish Educated Chancellor Alistair Darling back and the rest of the Scottish clan interfering in England back.
Once Scotland is gone, perhaps England can have a vote (similar to the recent Irish Lisbon Vote) in order to pull out of the EU and then the Scottish as foreigners would no longer qualify to live or work here in England. |

If you want to know what Scotland would perhaps be like under the SNP, try reading any of Paul Johnston's Edinborough detective stories., They are very enjoyable, and quite plausible, when all is said and done.
There'll be as many kilted regiments in Scotland as there would have been in Red Ken Livingstone's London. Wake up! |

All those regiments I'm afraid have gone forever, amalgamated into one |

Without England who would train and supply them,..and God forbid, they should ever be called on to finance a war! Give them their independence! and the Welsh,.and anybody else that wants it..let,s see how the non-contributory, moaning bast*ards manage on their own! Most of them will be over the border like a shot to milk old England like the rest of the foreign losers! |

when southern Ireland became independent 1922, i think some wanted to transfer the Irish regiments into the new Eire army, but that never happened, all the Scot's regiments will disband on Independence |

Probably one or two I would guess-they are impressive. |

Those were British regiments raised by the English and their allies in Scotland and often carry the word Royal in their names so it is unlikely. If Scotland gains independence it is likely that like Ireland they will only be able to afford a very minimal defence capability. |

Not enough Scots want independence to turn your question into a reality. A referendum was held some years ago which proved that and a similar referendum now will have the same result. Alex Salmond holds onto power in Holyrood by dint of a one seat majority attained by a voting populace who were disenchanted by Labour but not prepared to vote Tory. |

Probably not, as they will be no requirement for so many regiments. |

it would be nice to see Scotland's whole glorious culture rise from the ashes when they get their independence. but i suspect that their leaders 'like the leaders of Britain' will sell them and their culture and history down the river to the control of the EU for personal gain. it seems to me that the PEOPLE (not politicians) of England Ireland Scotland and Wales should unite and over throw the whole EU dictatorship and lead the way for the rest of the people of Europe. after that!! we need to teach our traitorous back stabbing politicians a lesson they will never forget |

When? if only we knew when, it would save us bailing the beggars out week in and week out.
seriously the boys would stay with their regiments for the most part, Scotland will no more have an army than give up drinking. The illusion of independence may let them blow millions ( of British pounds) on a grandiose parliament, but dream on, its been a valued part of the UK for too long to accept being an economic wasteland reliant on the Shetland Islanders and the Orkneys for income |

Not unless a few more glorious Highlanders can be persuaded to join up to swell the ranks of the Scottish Army than could be persuaded to ensure the survival of the Gordons, the Argyles, the RHF and the Black Watch - to name but a few..
If they could be persuaded, how would the Scottish Government fund the training, equipping and maintaining of such an army, and would they all be infantry? If so, with what role?
There is nothing more uncomfortable to fight in with modern weapons than a georgeous swirling kilt with nae knickers.
Or are we talking about duffing up the English, pipes skirling, kilts swinging and claymores aloft? |

What would be the use of some kilted regiments? |

What need would Scotland have for regiments of soldiers?
It was the English that took young Scotish men to give their lives in their battles.
Scotland is a small peaceful country, no need for soldiers. |
