When do they move me?

I know you come home, in the Air Force, after tech school. Is this when they come to get my stuff before I go to my first duty station? Or do they come while I am in tech and have a family member there?

If your Tech school is longer than 6 months they may authorize a move of household goods (HHG) for you because it is awhile but standard dorms in Tech school are supplied with everything. When you get hte orders for your first command you can set up a move of HHG. Make sure that if you are going to move your things you get a specific POA for a family member or friend that authorizes them to supervise the movers while they are packing in case you can't make it home on the dates they are there doing it.

You will go to a TMO briefing while at Tech School and set up a date/time. You do not have to be present...they will go over this with you during your TMO briefing. You can appoint some one to supervise the pick up (I picked my mom since I had been living at home). I was already at my first base when TMO came to pick up my stuff. I had accrued six days of leave, I only took six days so I wouldn't go in the "hole". I was able to go home for Christmas as a result.

You will have to take leave to go home. Most people take about two weeks (from what I have seen). A family member cannot sign for your household goods to be moved. You must be there to watch them pack up your stuff. But they can make that happen while you are at home.

In our initial move, the Army gave me a phone number to call of a local contracted mover. I called them up and scheduled a time and told them how much stuff we had to move, the sizes of the beds, any weird things they were moving (like a canoe), etc. But I wasn't able to sign for anything, my hubby had to be there to do it.
